Comment Of The Day: Amplification, Please!

oo

Bruce McD. has left the following comment on the post "Many Attend Vigil Against Bias Crime In Carroll Gardens ":

I'm so glad this rally happened! I found it puzzling, though, that there was no amplification for the speakers, some of whom were nearly impossible to hear even 10 feet away. A bullhorn would have worked wonders!

I also found it puzzling that they allowed the one former candidate for our city council seat who OPPOSED gay equality (Jon Heyer) to speak at the rally, even though several of the other candidates who vied for the seat and supported gay equality (including one who is openly gay) were also in attendance and weren't asked to say a few words. I don't care how quickly he "responded" to word that this attack happened, there were better options to put front and center who offer unequivocal support GLBT right

Could the answer as to why a former canidate spoke be that the old local powers are still pushing him for elected office. These old power brokers are finding hard to understand that Carroll Gardens has changed and that the "new" people awill not be fooled by the games these old power brokers are used to playing.

There ARE some 'oldies' in CG that aren't homophobic. I take umbrage to this comment.

Concetta, you are right, but while I truly believe that most CG "oldies" are not homophobic, there are some who are. Most feelings are from an old way of looking at things and more has changed in the past hundred years than at any time in history, so everyone needs to take a deep breath and give each other a break. This excludes people who live with hate and violence. For them I give no latitude.

It's a generational thing, and two generations from now hardly anyone people will care about sexual orientation. There will always be evil and dangerous people who will take advantage of stupidity and hate. Regardless of who we are, we need to look out for each other with kindness.

The thing that bugs me is that CG had, it seems, more Brooklyn and Manhattan politicians quickly sign up to attend this the vigil/rally than any other thing that has gone on here for awhile.

With notable exceptions, where were the rest of you when we were fighting Bloomberg over Super Fund? Where were you when we were saying "help", developers' greed at our expense is unacceptable? My comment is not meant to diminish the pain and suffering by the person who was beaten, but to point out that the electeds pick and choose what they show up for. I hope that true care is given to things that affect us instead of using this as a one-time photo op event.
