Beginning on June 18th through June 24th, Chef Gordon Ramsey will be filming a new episode of his "Kitchen Nightmares" show on Court Street. The British chef and TV personality will "delve deep into the inner workings" of a local restaurant to "explore everything from unsanitary refrigerators to lazy and inexperienced staff to diagnose the real problems."

The eatery Ramsey will attempt to 'save' here in Carroll Gardens?  Mama Mia at 307 Court Street.

This should be interesting in so many ways and on so many levels, don't you think?

I hope they highlight how many really GOOD restaurants there are in the area, and how behind this restaurant is.

(I say that with an assumption that it is behind - I've never been.)

We used to eat here all the time. The food was consistent good if you liked traditional "red sauce" Italian. But the service was usually not very good (slow and sloppy). I hope they don't do anything to screw up Sal's pizzas because I think they are fairly good.

Have you ever seen the show? Its not a show you want to see a restaurant you eat at on. Ugh! I hope some of the gross stuff you see on that show does not happen at this restaurant.

It will be interesting to see Ramsay, who is reknowned for not pulling his punches, taking on and hopefully saving this typical Italian Brooklyn Restaurant. Perhaps he could also take a look at Casa Rosa too, he's too late for Vinnies.

The place is disgusting.

I hope they check out Sal's as well. The sign that says "No grated cheese for slices" is absurd!

Why on EARTH would they agree to do this show? They must be paying Sal a lot of money....

Thanks for clarifying all those flyers, Katia. You are so right! Any info on when the show might be aired?

No, I don't but I guess in late fall.

Do not move your cars!! They do not have City issued Parking Permits!!! This is a non union production. They do NOT have parking permits and therefore can NOT tow cars and reserve parking.

There is nothing, in my opinion, that can be done to fix this restaurant. Get a new awning already! It's an eye sore and the owner is rude.

I love this show. Never at at MM's. Can't wait to see this.

John, the owner of Sals/Mama Maria, is a great guy who really just wants to find ways to have a better restaurant without totally selling out to the new arrivals to the neighborhood. I really hope this helps him. I'd rather spend my money there than at that terrible Bushenwank.

he should head over to Casa Rosa after he's through and help them out with their terrible food.

I can't wait to watch Sal and Chef Ramsey engage in fisticuffs!

Sals used to be the go to place for mediocre affordable pizza, at least for kid's birthdays, but it became an expensive embarrassment ("This is Brooklyn Pizza"). Mama Maria's kept that level of mediocrity, but with the better Italian food around and the ease of making cheaper mediocre-to-better Italian at home I may order from there once a year. I am hopeful that this will be more than an episode, an actual improvement in the under $20 range. If they fake going upscale and raise their prices it will be worse.

They crew is completing staging set up today. Gordon Ramsay will be on the premises starting tomorrow (Wednesday). Look for him to ride up on his motorbike (thanks LJ Lindhurst!) and do his gratuitous shirtless scene sometime tomorrow morning.

There's enough new-ish competition (Fragole for better Italian, South Brooklyn for better but more expensive slices, and the general restaurant resurgence in the neighborhood) to warrant improving/redoing the menu and brightening up the space. John, the owner, is an awesome guy, dining there can be fun, and this is a local-family-owned spot that's worth the effort to creatively fix up. I wish them good luck and look forward to trying out the new menu.

I have to disagree with the 3:30pm poster. Have been ordering from Sal's for 10 years and over the years the prices have gone up and quality (and portion size) has gone down. I don't think he wants to do anything but make money.

John is a great guy and I wish the best for him, as for your comment about Buschenschank, I guess YOU wouldn't know a good restaurant if it bit you in the face. I saw Gordon's advance team eating at Buschenschank, and from what I overheard, it sounds like that is where he will be having his meals. Good luck mama Mia's!

I dont know anything about the owner or their motives but mama marias has been around for a while and we used to go on occasion. We have slacked off due to all the other available options (we tend to hit fragole now for italian). I can imagine it is hard to compete in this neighborhood. I hope the best for them with the show and that they can turn it around. I'd like to see the older neighborhood place being able to compete with the new farm-to-table crowd.

I used to love Sal's about 10 years ago. Like Tim I'd like to root for an old-school neighborhood joint to freshen its menu, don a bit of that farm-to-table sheen w/o going cutesy, and offer a nice wine/cocktail list to draw some folks in the door. There's certainly enough overspill to go around on Court! Can't wait to see the standard Gordon fake-heaving in the alley or walk-in.

We just stopped by to take a tour. The menu looks great. Per Ramsay's MO, it's simplified, one page, and *much* shorter, now with only 4 or 5 pasta dishes and the same number of primori. Both the pizzeria and main dining room decor have been updated, and all dishes are made fresh, same day. The wine list is the same, but on a separate menu page, and easier to see what's offered. I can't wait to try the new menu.

Too bad the new sign looks horrible. Is this a South Brooklyn red sauce place, or a Jersey strip mall fake southwestern steak house?

Anonymous said...

I agree---the new sign leaves much to be desired. And I saw what I assume to be new tables covered in a newspaper print that are also ugly. Usually, I think the show does a great job with the re-designs, but this isn't looking so good. I've never eaten at Mama Maria's(it never seemed too appealing), but I'd like to try it with the new menu (even if the new decor doesn't seem too promising).

Does anyone know when the episode will be aired?

UGH! LOUSY Take out menu... now where do we go for straight no chaser favorites like Stuffed Shells and a house salad ... plus the online menu still shows the old stuff....

Bad news... for Sal's Pizzeria!!!!

Saw the show... Great ending...
More...question is... Did it flood during the hurricane...?

Bought 4 pizzas at Sal's. Owner was back in his blue polo shirt with head in the pizza dough. Charged me over $95 for the pizza and then told me there was a 5% surcharge for using a credit card. Yep, this is 2012 and he surcharges for a credit card. Got home to find my final bill over $110. So that is $110 for 3 large and one medium pizza. And we still had to tip the delivery guy...

Did the show just air?
Whatever Ramsey did obviously was not enough. Mama Maria is mostly dead, even on a Friday night.

$110 for 3 pizzas? That's insanity.
