Breaking News! Fire At D'Amico's On Court Street

Just got a report that there is smoke coming out of D'Amico's, the coffee roaster and café on Court Street. Fire trucks and an ambulance are on the scene.   An elderly gentleman was carried out on a stretcher, but appeared to be fine.
Someone indicated that the coffee roaster had caught fire.

Just recently, D'Amicos, which has been in business at 309 Court Street since 1948, had been dealing with an anonymous 311 caller, who had complained about the smell of roasting coffee. The same person had also called in a few false alarms to the Fire Department.

The 311 calls had prompted a visit from an New York City's Department of Environmental Protection inspector, who told the d'Amicos that they needed a costly after-burner to reduce the smell.

Joan D'Amico explained to me back in April of this year that they were in the process of looking into the necessary requirements and are in the process of correcting the problem, but that it would take some time.

Hopefully, this is not the end for this much-loved family-owned business.  Carroll Gardens would not be the same without them.

Thank you to Lucy Paynter for the photos.

For all the coffee that is consumed in CG,I don't understand the complaint about the roasting aroma. I love it!!glad to hear everything is ok at D'amico's.
BTW, love your new top page photo.

Agreed. That smell is just part of the neighborhood.

isn't that a great photo? My son and his girlfriend Lucy just moved back to the neighborhood and are reading PMFA on a more regular basis. Lucy thought the site needed a new header, so she used one of my photos to make this one.

Ugh—I'm sorry people but that smell is just awful. It's appropriate that I'm posting this under a story about their fire as this is exactly what the so called 'wonderful aroma' smells like.

Ditto - I love the new header picture, also, as well as the "About" picture of you. That's a knockout!! Did Max take it?

D'Amico has been closed for 2 weeks by the fire department.

Love D'Amico's and hope everything turns out okay. The coffee roasting smell is great. (And of course their coffee is great.)

Too bad the Anonymous 311 complainer doesn't have the guts to air his/her complaints in public. If I have a problem with someone, I say it to their face. Some people are born tattlers.

Anon 4:04 - incorrect.

It was open yesterday; they are still selling product. Currently they have no roaster.

Keep supporting D'Amicos.

We saw the owner yesterday and she said that they were fine. Hang in there D'Amico!

We saw the owner yesterday and she said that they were fine and working to get things back on track. Hang in there D'Amico, you have a lot of support from the neighbors.

That's good to know. I saw that they were open on Friday when I walked by.
