From PMFA's Mail Box: Stolen Packages?

oo
Just got this email from a local resident:
"It's that time of year again. Is anyone experiencing packages being stolen from their stoops/inside their door ways? We had a package delivered from UPS yesterday at 4:30pm. Came home at 6pm - and the package was not there. Be cautious!"
Has this happened to you lately?

Here's a tip...if you open an online account with UPS.com, you can subscribe to email delivery notices providing usually a 4-hour window for your package's arrival. It also gives you the option to change the delivery time if it's not convenient for you. The account is free, so you have nothing to lose and may save yourself some packages at this time of year. I have an account, and it's been very helpful for tracking my deliveries and for shipping my own packages, as well.

I've always notice it UPS packages that go missing- not FED EX or USPS at our building. They never want you to call the police- they'd rather you open a case and get refunded....Something fishy there.

In response to packages being stolen... I live on 3rd Place and both myself and my neighbors have had multiple packages stolen. We have posted signs on the door for deliveries NOT to be left at the door and we also notified the police on Union Street.

Here is a new scoop for you: the post office is not delivering mail to our block. It hasn't all week. Rumor has it that there was a replacement assigned to the block, and the new carrier simply is not doing the job. People are waiting on Amazon packages, holiday cards from families. 11231 PO is not answering calls to complain. Can you please run with this story. Its beyond a travesty.

This has happened in our building too. People will come and just get anyone to buzz them in and grab whatever they can see.

DNAinfo had this story over the summer: http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20130829/red-hook/lost-mail-rude-staff-at-red-hook-post-office-anger-locals

Packages continue to be stolen. I've had 2 stolen this past weekend...the thief let himself right in through the front gate and left his footprints in the snow.

The 76th PCT should take petty theft seriously - if allowed to continue it will blossom into more frequent incidents of more serious crimes like muggings and home/auto break-ins. The PCT is wont to respond and when officers do respond they resist filling out police reports because it influences the crime stats for the neighborhood.

I would like to know if anyone else has had packages stolen recently? It would be good to have a sense of how frequently this is happening.
