You may have noticed that Smith Street has recently been repaved from Union Street towards Atlantic Avenue. It is the first time in a long, long while that the roadway has looked so smooth. Just yesterday, white lines have been applied to the tar to indicate pedestrian crossings and lanes.

Of course, the paint will soon fade, but for a very short period of time, the markings are clearly visible and the bicycle lane actually looks like a separate lane.

If you are a bicyclist, you might want to ride down Smith Street just to enjoy the smooth surface and the extra sense of security that comes from a clearly marked dedicated lane.

On one-way streets, bicycles should stay to the left, where they are as close as they can be to the motorists' vision.

Well, that makes sense but too late in this case, I guess.
