Malai, an ice cream company that has been serving up scoops of delectable flavors
such as Golden Tumeric, Lemon Cardamom, Sweet Corn Safran, and Orange fennel at food markets and pop-ups around New York City, is currently in the process of opening its first brick and mortar store at 268 Smith Street in Carroll Gardens.
Until construction begins on the new ice cream parlor, owner Pooja Bavishi has opened a pop-up in the space to introduce the community to her handcrafted creamy dessert. It is open Monday and Friday evenings from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 12pm to 10 pm.
Bavishi's draws inspiration from her Indian heritage for her ice cream flavors. The creamy, airy, eggless texture combined with aromatic spices in unusual combinations is truly tasty and unique.
We stopped by over the week-end and ordered the Rose With Cinnamon-Roasted Almonds, which was amazing and incredibly satisfying.
Have you tried any of the flavors yet? Glad to have Malai in the neighborhood?

Didn't that use to be Smith & Vine's space? When did they move?
That is indeed their former space. Smith and Vine moved to a storefront on Smith between President and Union.
I guess a filled storefront is better than a vacant one, but an ice cream parlor does not generate the kind of traffic all year round that Smith Street needs. I also question the economics of opening an ice cream parlor in September/October and losing the revenue that a pre-summer opening would have provided. Nevertheless, good luck to them
