"Is it not cruel to let our city die by degrees, stripped of all her proud monuments, until there will be nothing left of all her history and beauty to inspire our children? If they are not inspired by the past of our city, where will they find the strength to fight for her future?" Jacqueline Kennedy

Dear Carroll Gardeners, you may have heard by now about the tragic death of Hugo Garcia, a bicycle delivery man who worked for Bagels By The Park, right here in our neighborhood.

On January 1st, he was killed in Sunset Park on his way to work on his bike, when a taxi driver opened his car door, right in Hugo's path. Hugo was thrown off his bike and hit by another vehicle.
He passed away shortly afterwards at NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn.

His friends and co-workers have organized a Go-Fund-Me campaign to help his family in Guatemala. The goal is a modest $,2000 of which $540 have been raises as of this morning.

Let us fulfill this goal and hopefully surpass it. We can do this! Please click here and contribute.

I have been blown away by everyone’s generosity. That’s why I love Carroll Gardens and my readers.

thanks for sharing this. i subsequently shared it with friends in the neighborhood, who have donated to the fund. there’s so much for the family to take on, but hopefully these small gestures add up to meaningful help.

For sure, Chance Bliss. Apparently, Hugo’s brother works at Bagels by the Park. I am sure the donations will help, even in a small way.
