Sad news!
This is not exactly how we were planning on starting the new year, but over the week-end, we found out that Watty And Meg, a much loved restaurant at 248 Court Street at Kane Street closed its doors as of January 1st, 2020.
Its web site has been taken down and Yelp and a note on the door of the establishment thanks its patrons for twelve years of friendship, family and memories, but does nor reveal why the restaurant was closing.
By all appearances, Watty and Meg was very popular, especially when the weather was warm and patrons could sit outside on the sidewalk.
The eatery will be very much missed in the neighborhood. Let us hope a worthy replacement will soon take over this great corner location.

For those keeping track, the spot was formerly occupied by Caffe Carciofo.

Is there active concern about how many vacant storefronts there are? It's sad to see...

Yes, GP, and not only in our neighborhood. There is quite a high vacancy rate for retail spaces all over the city.

I have some solid restaurant ideas if anybody wants to invest and knows how to operate one?!

that's sad. the space always had a nice vibe, while i appreciated their gestures of generosity to customers... going back to their days at boca lupo over on henry street.

What terrible news. Do we know why? Increased rent?

The inside is beautiful. I hope Starbucks (or whichever chain it inevitably will be rented to) doesn't destroy it.

12 years? This place opened in 2009. They couldn't even get their years of operation right. (In their own bio! https://www.yelp.com/biz/watty-and-meg-brooklyn)

I tried to give W&M numerous opportunities and every time they failed. Poor service, bland food, incorrect made drinks, on and on and on. The owner, Sosie, ran a good operation at Millie's in Richmond, but it just didn't work here.
Also, when she walks into a bar ]down the street from W&M and gives the bartender attitude that he doesn't know her drink or who she is, her quote "I own the best restaurant in the neighborhood" , then drinks more then half her drink and says its bad, I just can't be sorry that this place closed.

No reason was given. It may be that, but may also be because after twelve years, it was time. Running a restaurant can’t be too easy

Any and all storefronts vacant after a limited period of time should trigger punitive tax penalties for landlords. It should include provisions that storefronts filled with banks or chain stores will not relieve the tax penalty. Where are you on this DeBlasio?

We had our reception there in 2009. Sosie was super, Andy and the rest of the staff was great, and a reliable, excellent menu.

I’m with @Jackson Ravio, I gave this place numerous times, failed me somehow each time. This is a prime spot, hope something better opens up.

I agree with @Jackson Ravio, too. We went several times over the years and the food never did it for me. Some of the menu choices were just plain odd, with some very heavy dishes offered over the summer, for example.

I do hope the space gets filled soon.

Like too many restaurants in this neighborhood, the food at Watty & Meg was mediocre and overpriced. I tried it a few times when it opened and gave up. I'm surprised they lasted that long, but it's a prime location, right across from the movie theater. Hopefully a place with reasonably priced good food (and not another Italian or Thai restaurant!) will take its place.
