Cookies And Coffee: Chip City Opens On Smith Street

oo
Chip City, a small chain that started in Astoria, Queens, has just opened its seventh New York City store at 361 Smith Street in Carroll Gardens. The store offers freshly baked cookies in four different flavors every day and rotates its menu weekly. Besides classic cookies like chocolate chip, peanut butter chocolate, and white chocolate macadamia, the offerings include more unusual flavors like Nutella Sea Salt and Glazed Pear.
The price per cookie is $4, or $20 for five.  Customers also have the option to purchase frozen cookie dough bundles that can be baked at home.
Though Chip City also offers coffee to go and is right next to the F train subway station, I wonder if a store selling just cookies will do at this location.  After all, Momofuku Milk Bar, which had a similar menu, decided to close its location right across the street in 2019.
What do you think, dear Reader?

You'll have to sell a lot of cookies to pay that rent

I will not be buying a $4 cookie. On the other hand, I was so sad that Swallow was forced to close. According to the owner, Anne, I think they were raising her rent to something like $12k per month. I wonder if the cookie place is paying that given that the pandemic unfolded just after Swallow closed. Regardless, I miss Swallow so much.

I agree, hard to swallow chip city.

A similar cookie store Ella Crown just opened on Atlantic Ave between Clinton and Henry. These all look like competitors / copy cats of Levain, which sells more than cookies.

Ugh.

The cookies were really delicious, and they have great coffee deals before noon. I hope it survives. Would prefer that to a vacant storefront.

The cookies are delicious! I wish them well.

I loved Swallow. I hope they can find a new location in the neighborhood.

$4 for a cookie and maybe $3.75 for a cappuccino as a morning snack/breakfast on the run and folks say they don't have any money One cookie $4 vs. bag of Tates $5.

It's actually $20 for six cookies... From a reader whose family's roots are over one hundred years deep in Carroll Gardens: An active store keeps the pulse beating on that block which is a good thing and, bluntly, this cookie shop is better than a Starbucks, bank, crappy Chinese takeout food, vape shop, yet another artisanal pizza joint (puhleeze) or evil corporate chain. Face it peeps, Carroll Gardens IS a $4-a-cookie-hood...

The cookies are outrageously delicious. Yes $4 is steep, but it's a treat, not buying a dozen every day. And folks complaining about the price? Any specialty coffee is going to run $5. A package of cigarettes is $15. One subway fare is $2.75. The price does not seem terrible in that context.

And who cares if they are ripping off Lavain? It's not like they are going to open a shop on Smith Street any time soon. Milk Bar across the street closed.

Lets wish them well. Stop in for an occasional treat an hope they survive.

Like someone previously commented, its better than a nail salon, realtor or even even worse a vacant storefront.

And yes, I too loved and miss Swallow. I am wondering how many folks who miss Swallow actually made purchases there ON A FREQUENT BASIS?

I don't like this place ( I prefer the MUCH better Levain) but it is probably going to do well since it is located right across the street from two schools. Kids love cookies. It'll probably be packed after school.

I personally don't like Chip because they use imitation vanilla in their cookies. (The ingredients are listed on their website) That not only ruins the flavor of the cookie, but it's also just not good for you. Levain uses real vanilla extract. So, if you like fake tasting cookies you'll like this place. If you want a cookie that tastes real, do like me and order from Levain in Williamsburg. They deliver to Carroll Gardens.

(I'm not affiliated with Levain, I just really love their cookies)

Imitation vanilla is NOT vanilla. You are right 10:05 - Personally, I don't mind a $4 cookie for a treat, but imitation vanilla is an insult, and BAD for you to boot.
