Papél New York Celebrates Its Ninth Year In Cobble Hill By Starting A Maker Collective

Papél, New York, the wonderful Cobble Hill-based paperie at 225 Court Street has opened its retail space to a collective of local makers to bring 'unique and attainable' goods to this already fabulous neighborhood resource.From Raegan, Papel's proprietor:

"Next week marks my 9th year in Cobble Hill with Papel New York; much has changed since our grand opening and I wanted to share with you some happenings about the shop. I recently started a Maker Collective which includes a rotating display of Artisan-made unique goods. The Makers all happen to be both local to Brooklyn and Female Owned companies as well. While I cannot say that my next group of Makers will indeed be local or Women, I can say though without a doubt, that as with all of my products, they will certainly be curated and hand crafted with love by artisans both near and far. We will be having a Meet the Maker night in the next coming weeks, details to follow, for folks in the community to take a snoop at all that is new, have a brew or two, and support these amazing artists that we are featuring over the next few months. We hope you are just as excited as we are."

Yes, indeed, we are.

Currently, the collective included jewelry designs by FrogAspect and Diana Mitchell, leather handbags by Shana Luther, natural fiber garments by Diana Arge, and surfer girl apparel by Surf Far.

Work Of Local Artist Allyn Howard On Exhibit At Papél On Court Street

I had the great pleasure of meeting Carroll Gardens artist Allyn Howard this summer when a mutual friend introduced us.  Allyn creates the most charming artwork and murals for children and has launched a whimsical line of greeting cards, tees and prints featuring her very endearing characters Top Dog, Twiggy Cat and Space Mouse as well as Yoga Bun, "a bunny trying to get in shape and in touch with the infinite Universe!" 


Of her work, Allyn writes:
“I strive to create charming scenes and characters to delight and engage children and adults alike! Animals with aspirations, great and small, play a large part in my work. Bright color and a joyful exuberance characterize my work as a whole.”

A select group of Allyn's paintings under the title “Little Wonders” is currently on exhibit at Papél, New York,  the paperie located  at 225 Court Street.

A Memorial To "Andy The Barber And Anna, His Queen Of Court Street"

Could it possibly be that I walked up and down Court Street over the last couple of months and failed to notice the plaque attached to the brick façade of number 225 Court Street, commemorating the life of Italian immigrants and the previous owners of the house, "Andy the Barber" and his "Queen of Court Street"?

I finally noticed it and stopped to read the dedication, which is just lovely. Andrew and Anna Pitti bought # 225 on November 1, 1959. It was " renovated structurally and emotionally with love, respect, joy and friendship."

My friend Rita was standing by my side, reading the plaque as well. Rita, who was born and raised in the neighborhood, immediately remembered Andy and Anna. She confirmed that, indeed, they were a wonderful couple. She remembers that one of their daughters owned a hardware store across the street. (It is now a laundromat/dry cleaner.)
If anyone else knew them and can tell us a bit more of Andy and Anna's life, it would be greatly appreciated.

(And to my children, a-not-so subtle hint: a plaque like this on our house after your father and I are gone would be very nice.)

Papél on Court To (Belatedly) Celebrate Grand Opening

Papél, the beautiful new eco-friendly paperie at 225 Court Street opened its doors in early December, but the store will actually celebrate its grand opening on January 22.
The opening will feature the work of Brooklyn Artist Soosan Joon Silanee.

Beautiful Paper Products At Pápel On Court Street

The "Pápel" sign had been up since the beginning of November at 225 Court Street, but the paper goods store only opened its doors a few days ago. Just in time for the holidays, Pápel provides beautiful cards and wrapping paper, as well as stylish journals and notebooks.
It's a nice addition to the neighborhood.
The new store moved into the space once occupied by the boutique Ali Kat.

'Papel' Coming To Former Boutique On Court Street

A poster in the window at 225 Court Street indicates that 'Papel" is coming to the space once occupied by Ali Kat. 'Papel', of course means 'paper' in Spanish. There is even a little paper airplane on the poster.
So in the future, we may be able to order wedding invitations and baby announcements here.
(Maybe this place is associated with one of the same name in California?)

Ali Kat NYC On Court Street Bids Brooklyn Good-Bye

Just noticed the " Bye Bye Brooklyn" signs in Ali Kat's window yesterday as I was walking by. The little boutique store at 225 Court Street specialized in fashions for teens.

The doors are still open and merchandise has been reduced up to 70 %.
