Buy A Rebuilding Gift Certificate And Help Red Hook Lobster Pound Back On Its Feet After Sandy

The Red Hook Lobster Pound is just one of the many businesses in Red Hook that was severely damaged by Hurricane Sandy two weeks ago. Ever since, its owner Susan Povich, whom I first met and interviewed when she started the lobster pound back in 2009, has been trying to rebuilt her business at 284 Van Brunt Street, which was under four feet of water. She estimated that this will take at least two months, if not longer.

Most importantly, it will take some much needed funds. To that end, she has started a Rebuilding Gift certificate sale/fundraising campaign through Small Knot, com.
It's an easy way to help a local business get back on its feet.

Here is more information on the fundraiser.

Purchase gift certificates to rebuild the Red Hook Lobster Pound
The whole community took a whoopin from that Storm Sandy. She filled up our tanks with more salt water than we could handle. We need to rebuild our lobster tanks, walk-in, kitchen and store. We need new equipment on top of new walls and floors! We also thought that it was high time for a bathroom! Our staff is so wonderful and we would love to be able to employ them to help during the rebuild.
Red Hook is a special place. It is the closest that NYC has to a fishing village, which is one of the reasons we moved here 15 years ago and opened the Red Hook Lobster Pound 5 years ago. We gave so much of ourselves to this project, it was heartbreaking to open the door on October 30.
The water raced down our main street and flooded The Pound and the commissary with over four feet of water, and there is extensive damage. Two of our vehicles are not functioning, our food truck needs to be totally rebuilt. We had to demolish all the walls, take up the floors, trash the lobster tanks and all our inventory.
We are rebuilding! This time with a/c and a customer W.C. We are reaching out to you to help us. Anyone that would like to help out, please e-mail: info [at] redhooklobster [dot] com, or tweet us @Redhooklobster.This could mean manpower, tradesmen, designers, painters, comedian, garbage bags, or anything else you can think of to lend a hand. Anything is appreciated.
We are raising this money through a special gift certificate program. For every gift certificate that you buy now, 75% of the purchase price will be yours to use at any of our locations and 25% will go directly to the rebuild. Buy now, lobstericiousness later! It makes a great Christmas or Chanukah present (for the Traif in all of us). Oh, and when we reopen the picnic room (bigger, expanded, A/C Heat and the all important W.C.) we will have a special party to thank all of our helpers and contributors.

Future New York "Rollin Lobster Love Shack"

Since opening Red Hook Lobster Pound in 2009, Brooklynites Ralph and Susan have steadily grown their crustacean business. Not only have they supplied New Yorkers with the freshest Maine lobsters at their Van Brunt Street pound and served their delectable lobster rolls weekly at the Brooklyn Flea at 1 Hanson Place, they have also brought their 'lobster love' to Washington, D.C. via two food trucks, "Rollin Lobster Love Shack" Number One and Two.

In May, according to an announcement by Ralph and Susan, there will be a "Rollin Lobster Love Shack Number Three", and it will be rolling through the streets of New York City's five boroughs, bringing those lobster rolls to a street corner near you.

Susan writes:

Everyone has asked, why don't you have a lobster roll truck in NYC? Why only DC? Well folks, selling food off a truck in NYC is like going to war every day. Nevertheless, Ralph and I decided to give everyone what they want, a moveable losbter feast. Beginning in May, we will be bringing the Best Crustacean in the Nation to the streets of all five boroughs (yes, Manhattan us Brooklyn kids will show you some love) in a friggin' FOOD TRUCK -- the Rollin Lobster Love Shack, Lobby Roll #3 (1 and 2 are in DC). Warning, we still have some loose ends to tie
up. More on the truck later.
Due to recent developments in NYC vending laws, we will be on the move ALOT, the best way to find us will be twitter@redhooklobster or @lobstertruckny, we may only be in one spot for an hour at a time.

Yet another reason why spring can't come fast enough, I say.

***FYI: Until mid-March, there will be no live lobsters on sale at the pound at 284 Van Brunt Street because of tank maintenance. Check the website for further info.

"Lobstah Fest" In Red Hook Starting This Friday

Red Hook Lobster Pound Announces:
Lobstah Feast Fridays
@Rocky Sullivan's

IMG_7303

The great folks at the Red Hook Lobster Pound in Red Hook are starting a cool new event every Friday until the end of this year and it involves....you guessed it....lobster, but also beer, wine, pizza, crab legs and more. I'll let Susan Povich, of the Pound, tell you more.

I wanted to let everyone know about this family friendly event happening every Friday!

Red Hook Lobster Pound is popping up every Friday beginning August 28 through the end of the year at Rocky Sullivan's in Red Hook, corner of Dwight and Van Dyke Street. Lobsters will be served between 6 and 9 pm.
Our crew will be boiling up the freshest lobster in NYC in the courtyard and you can enjoy the feast on the incomparable roof deck or inside, rain or shine. Neighbor Red Hook Winery is breaking out some of its first production white wine for the occasion. Other local edibles will be featured in upcoming weeks.
$23.00 * gets you a 1 ½ lb lobster, farm fresh corn, coleslaw or potato salad and lots of buttery smiles. Jonah Crab claws will also be available. Bisque, soups and other delectables will soon follow.
If lobster is not your fare, Rocky Sullivan's will be serving its wood fired pizzas, along with libations including the extraordinary Six Points ales.
For those of you who came to the Brooklyn Yard Lobster Boil, we promise, the line will be under control. However, if you know that you are coming on any given Friday, send us an email so that we can bring down enough lobster! Lobstah Feast Fridays are first-come first served, however, email reservations are required for parties of 6 or more.

Psssstttt! I'll let you in on a secret.
Want to know where to get the very best and the very freshest lobsters in New York City? And when I mean fresh, I mean 'a-couple-of-hours-off-the boat' fresh. Give up? At the very new, soon to be opened, Red Hook Lobster Pound.

Starting on April 25, Susan Povich and her husband Ralph Gorham will drive to Maine weekly and bring back the freshest lobster directly off the lobster boats and bring them back to their store at 284 Van Brunt Street.

When I stopped by to see Susan and Ralph, they showed me their new tanks and introduced me to some crustaceans. " We are bringing the fishing business back to Red Hook." Susan laughed.

You can contact Susan and Ralph at redhooklobster[ at ]gmail.com or by calling 646 326 7650. They are accepting pre-orders now.
And when you pick up your lobsters, make sure to check out the store's wonderful wall mural painted by local artist Jay Crider.

Oh, and in case you are feeling a bit apprehensive about preparing lobsters, Susan and Ralph have investigated the most humane way of cooking them. They will gladly tell you how.
