French Restaurant Dumonet In Carroll Gardens To Close At End Of The Year

Sadly, Dumonet, the French-American Bistro at 315 Smith Street will be closing at the end of December, after just one year in Carroll Gardens.

Jean-Louis and Karen Dumonet announced the closure on their eatery's Instagram page on Wednesday.

"Although very bittersweet we are excited to announce a new chapter in our lives. DUMONET will have its last service on December 30th 2018. Thank you all for being part of our passion project and adventure this last year. We’re excited for what’s around the corner for us...stay tuned! In the meantime, see you at DUMONET this week and next for its last hurrah!" 

Chef Jean-Louis previously opened Trois Jean Bistro, which he sold in 2000. He joined his mentor Jean-Louis Palladin at Palladin, at The Carlyle Hotel, and in 2003, opened "Dumonet at The Carlyle". Since 2008, Jean-Louis has been the Executive chef of the prestigious Union Club, the oldest private Men’s social club in the US.

The French restaurant opened in the former Red Rose restaurant, which the Romano family operated at this location for 34 years.

Jean-Louis and Karen Dumonet had re-imagined the space, leaving the old familiar wood bar exactly as it had been when it was Red Rose. It seemed like a perfect mixture of the neighborhood's past and present.

We are sad to see Jean-Louis and Karen go, but wish them all the best in their new endeavor.

A Moment In Time: At Dumonet On Smith Street Last Night

I spent the most pleasurable evening at the brand new Dumonet Brooklyn on Smith Street last night.  The French restaurant opened in the former Red Rose restaurant, which the Romano family operated at this location for 34 years.

New owners Jean-Louis and Karen Dumonet have re-imagined the space, but the old familiar wood bar is still exactly as it was and the restaurant has a wonderful familiarity about it.
Best of all, Tony Romano walked in last night and took his seat at his usual table, chatting with customers, just as he always did. His retirement to Florida lasted exactly four days before he returned to Brooklyn.

It was a perfect Carroll Gardens moment, a perfect mixture of the neighborhoods past and present.

Dumonet is now open  at 315 Smith street and the food is absolutely delicious.

Dumonet Brooklyn: French "Haute Yet Hearty" Cuisine Coming To Former Red Rose Space On Smith Street

When Red Rose, one of the last iconic family-owned restaurants in Carroll Gardens closed its doors at the end of September of this year, many in the neighborhood were heartbroken. After all, the Romano family had been serving classic Italian and Sicilian specialties at their eatery since 1983. Antonio Romano and his son Santo retired after closing Red Rose and have handed over the space at 315 Smith Street to Jean-Louis and Karen Dumonet, who are currently busy re-inventing it as Dumonet Brooklyn.

According to the web site for Dumonet Brooklyn, the  new restaurant will offer "elevated French bistro dining in the heart of Brooklyn's Carroll Gardens, featuring the best of American and French wines." No definite opening date has been announced, but it will be in early December.
