A Call For Hostas: The Friends Of Carroll Park Would Love Some Interesting Specimens

Dear Readers,

The gardening volunteers of the Friends of Carroll Park recently turned the plant border at the corner of Smith Street and President Street into a shade garden with lots of different hostas. But they need many more to plant.

If you have any wonderful specimens in your garden that you can divide and would like to share, the Friends will gladly find a new home for it in the new border.

The stress is on "interesting" hostas, as in fancy-leaved or variegated kinds in unusual greens.

Please bring your plant(s) to the Carroll Park park house and leave them for Paul, the group's gardener extraordinaire. You can also contact the Friends Of Carroll Park at friendsofcarrollpark at yahoo dot com and I will put you in touch with the volunteers.

Summer In The City: Fun July Events In Carroll Park

If you are going to stick around the neighborhood this summer, make sure to check out the cool events scheduled in Carroll Park, thanks to the Friends Of Carroll Park, the wonderful volunteer organization, that maintains the plantings and brings you the yearly Flea Market and the Kids' Concert Series. Below is a list of events scheduled for July.

JULY IN CARROLL PARK

July 13, 2010: Bloodmobile “Little Doctors” Workshop #1 , 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Join us on the Bloodmobile for the first of a two part hands-on session for 8-12 year olds. They will learn about the dynamics of blood donations, the critical need for blood, and barriers to recruiting blood donors. Our little doctors will also help market and run our park blood drive at the end of the month! For more information or to register, please email friendsofcarrollpark@yahoo.com.

July 18, 2010: Kids’ Concert Series – Randy Kaplan
The concert will kick off at 4:00 p.m., shine only. We’ll have food and crafts from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., so come with pocket money for crafts and treats. All proceeds to benefit Friends of Carroll Park.

July 20, 2010: Bloodmobile “Little Doctors” Workshop #2, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.
The second and final session of the Bloodmobile training program for 8-12 year olds, learning how the community can work together to address a critical health issue.

July 27, 2010: Carroll Park Blood Drive, 3:00 – 9:00 p.m.
“It takes all types” describes both Brooklyn and the New York Blood Center! Come support the graduates of our two-part Little Docs program as they don disposable scrubs and help run our neighborhood blood drive. Whether you’re solo or you rally your neighbors to join you, we hope you’ll give the gift of life when the Bloodmobile spends the day in Carroll Park!

July 31, 2010: Electronics Recycling Event, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Declare your independence from E-waste by disposing of your unwanted electronics at Smith Street between President and Union Streets, right off Carroll Park. The event will be held rain or shine and the following items are acceptable: Working and non-working computers, monitors, printers, scanners, keyboards, mice, cable, TV's, VCR's DVD players, phones,audio-visual equipment and PDAs. Carroll Park Flea Market 2010 As Eclectic And Fun As Ever!

Where in Carroll Gardens can one find the most eclectic mix of rare collectables, oriental carpets, pink tutus, beautifully planted flower boxes, Moroccan leather sandals, Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck toys from the 1950's, religious artifacts, and black-and-white checkered spandex pants, all in one place?

Well, at the annual Carroll Park Flea Market of course.

Early morning clouds gave way to blue skies on Saturday morning, and so, Flea 2010 was off to a great start. The event was organized by the Friends Of Carroll Park, a non-profit organization that works tirelessly to maintain and plant our neighborhood park, one of the oldest in Brooklyn.

Hope you were able to attend. It was a blast. It was a great way to run into friends and neighbors, catch up on neighborhood news and empty one's closets. I had a table myself and was able to sell quite a few items that I no longer needed. And what did I buy with some of the proceeds?

A pair of beautiful, luxurious Moroccan slippers, of course.

It's Back! Carroll Park Flea Market This Saturday

The Annual Carroll Park Flea Market

10 Am-5 Pm

Yes, it's that time of year again, when Carroll Park's ball field here in Carroll Gardens turns into a giant flea market, hosted by the Friends of Carroll Park, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the park for everyone.

Not only is this a perfect opportunity to browse for housewares, books, records and must-have tchotchkes, it is a way of socializing with your Carroll Gardens neighbors and to make new friends.

Saturday's Clean-Up In Carroll Park A Success

Last Saturday's clean-up in Carroll Park as part of the city-wide spring "It's My Park Day" was a huge success and much was accomplished. Friends of Carroll Park members were joined by other neighborhood residents and volunteers. They painted, weeded, planted, watered, swept and picked up trash all around the park.

Even the littlest Carroll Gardeners got busy and distributed wood chip mulch into the planting areas.

Volunteer opportunities exist all year long in Carroll Park. Please consider giving back a few hours by helping one of Brooklyn's oldest (and loveliest) park. You can contact the Friends of Carroll Park by emailing friendsofcarrollpark at yahoo dot com.

"It's My Park Day" In Carroll Park This Saturday

This Saturday, May 15th, come volunteer in Carroll Park for "It's My Park Day" and give a little back to our lovely neighborhood oasis.

Join members of the "Friends Of Carroll Park" group and give a little of your time to clean, paint, weed, and plant.

A variety of projects will be tackled this year, and Abilene on Court Street is offering one free drink to anyone who volunteers two hours of time in the park on this day.

Get involved and make one of Brooklyn's oldest parks even better.

Help Transform A Corner Of Carroll Park Into A Butterfly Garden

Friends Of Carroll Park member volunteer Laura Shippey has been tending the little garden corner at Carroll Street and Smith Street for a few years now. This spring, she will continue the border's transform it into a haven for butterflies.

However, she would appreciate some help from others.

If you love gardening and have a bit of time to beautify your neighborhood, please join her on two consecutive Saturdays: May 8th and May 15th from 1-4 PM
