NYPD Crime Stopper Offering Reward For Info Regarding Sexual Assault At Carroll Street Subway Station

A New York City Police Department Crime Stopper flier has been posted all over the Carroll Street F and G subway station here in Carroll Gardens in the past few days.
We were notified of the flier by reader Myriam, who wanted others in the neighborhood to be aware of it, even if they do not take the subway.

The police poster offers a reward of $2,500 for information regarding a sexual assault pattern and shows the photo of a man who is sought in an incident at the subway station this past January.

From the poster:

"On Thursday, January 14, 2021, at approximately 2:30 pm, at the Carroll Street subway station in the confines of the 76th Precinct in Brooklyn,  the perpetrator (pictured above) sexually assaulted a 12 year old victim. The perpetrator is also wanted in connection to similar separate incidents.

We sincerely hope that the victim is all right.  Please be aware of this incident and share with your neighbors and talk to your children.

If you have any details to provide to the NYC PD,  please call its hotline at 1 800 577 8477 or the 76th Precinct at: (718) 834-3211

Carroll Gardener Jay alerted PMFA about a potentially dangerous situation for subway riders in the neighborhood.  The parapet above the Manhattan bound  F/G train station at President Street seems to be compromised and looks as though it may collapse.
It is the entrance right next to Bagels by the Park and Gowanus Yacht club.
Please be careful and use the entrance on the other side of the street to be safe and until the situaton has been addressed by the M.T.A.
Please let others know.

"Trial In Patience": On Yesterday's F Train Delay At Carroll Street Subway Station

IMG_1023
The F train station at Carroll Street

Long time Carroll Gardens resident Anastasia sent us an email in regards to yesterday's F train delays. She writes:

"Friday's commute was another trial in patience at the Carroll Street subway station as the "F" train was grossly delayed. What I am curious about and what makes it worse is the fact that there is a token clerk in the booth and speakers in the Carroll Gardens subway station however, commuters were standing around talking to each other wondering what is going on while waiting for an "F" train to come. With no resolve, many took the "G" train, at least they were moving. It is too much to ask the token clerk to use the speakers in the subway station to announce whatever the problem the Culver line is having? Or better yet, get off his 'duff' and walk the platform and inform commuters what the problem is. Is this where our $2.50 is going? What good is having speakers in subway stations if they are not used? If they don't work - fix-it! after all, subway fares are going up to $2.75. For what?? FORGETABOUTIT....the "F" line sucks!"

Couldn't agree more. Apparently there were quite a few delays on the F this past week. How was your commute these past few days?

I, myself, took the train into Manhattan yesterday afternoon and had some serious problems swiping my metro card.  So did some of the people behind me.  One card reader would not work at all and the other only worked after repeated swiping. For a second, I thought I would have to jump over the turnstile like the folks over at the Bergen Street station last week.

Without Much Fanfare, Carroll Street F Train Stop Loses A Booth

Last week...and yesterday

While I was away last week, friend David sent me the photo above of the Carroll Street F and G train station's President Street Manhattan-side entrance, where the MTA booth was removed recently.

Granted, there still is a booth with a clerk at the other entrance at Second Place and there are two Metro card machines on the President Street side, but it always seemed safer at that end of the station when there was a clerk available, even if only occasionally.
Over the years, there have been many instances when the MTA wanted to eliminate this particular  booth, but there always came an angry outcry from the neighborhood and our politicians, who cited safety concerns. The MTA always backed off. I guess this time, the agency moved ahead without much advance notice to the community.
If the MTA isn't going to staff the booth with a station clerk at this end of the station, it's obsolete, of course, but I can't help being a bit sad about losing it.
How about you, neighbor?

Come On Already! Opening Of The F/G Train Station At 2nd Place Delayed Once Again

Pardon me for asking, but wtf? Plywood is still blocking the entrance of the F/G station on 2nd Place underneath the newly constructed apartment building at 360 Smith Street here in Carroll Gardens.
It had been announced that the entrance would re-open on Friday, June 17th. But no such luck. Instead, Andrew Ingelsby of the Metropolitan Transit Authority, send the following to Community Board 6:

From: "Inglesby, Andrew"
Sent: Thursday, June 16, 2011 10:01 AM
Subject: Carroll Street F G station 2nd Place entrance reopening

Unfortunately, the reopening of the Carroll Street F G station 2nd Place entrance has been delayed until the first week of July (most likely a July 1 safety inspection and then immediate opening if they pass inspection). The problem was in the ordering of the proper staircase treads and their installation by the building contractor; NYC Transit will not allow the entrance to be reopened until the building contractor of 360 Smith Street installs treads which will not compromise the safety of our customers and your community's residents.

Please also note, as I have indicated before, that once the 2nd Place plaza entrance is reopened, the building at 360 Smith Street will be responsible for the daily maintenance of it.

Thanks again for your patience,
Andy

In the meanwhile, Carroll Gardens' commuters continue to be inconvenienced. Unbelievable, isn't it?

For Real Now! Second Place Entrance To F Train Nearing Completion

The Second Place subway entrance to the F train here in Carroll Gardens was supposed to re-open at the end of February, but there have been delays. (Aren't there always?) Since then, there has been some visible progress. On Monday, a new concrete sidewalk was poured. When asked, two of the workers said that the entrance will re-open in two weeks.

The F train subway plaza and the staircase leading to the station at Second Place were blocked off during construction of the new building at 360 Smith Street back in the fall of 2010 . Since then, riders have been forced to use the smaller, narrower entrance at the corner of Second Street.
And for those who forgot what the plaza used to look like before the construction, here is a photo.

This is actually quite funny. For a few months now, someone has been writing the word "Moustache" above the upper lip of faces appearing in subway ads. Now, the 'Moustache' artist has been adding cursive facial hair to movie posters in the Carroll Street F train station.

The elusive street/subway artist has already
been mentioned on quite a few blogs as well as by WNYC. Who says a Sharpie can't pave the way to celebrity?
