Stange Mode Of Transportation Spotted on 2nd Street In Carroll Gardens

Over the week-end, reader Alisa spotted a very unusual car/spaceship in the neighborhood and was kind enough to forward the photos she took of it.
She writes:
"Saw this crazy vehicle on 2nd Street between Smith and Hoyt Streets. The plates were from Montana."
Which begs the question: can you take this thing on the highway and milage does this  thing get?
But most importantly...how about all those empty parking spots on 2nd Street?

Does anyone have any information on this vehicle?

The Painted Rocks Of Warren Street

The photos above were sent to me by 'Walking and Talking' who reports:
"I saw these last night as I was going home from work. Sweetly painted rocks line the path of Warren Street between Court and Smith on the north side of the street."

Now That's Locally Grown: Gowanus Produce

Produce garden at the corner of Carroll Street and Bond Street in Gowanus

Container gardening: growing fresh produce on sidewalk at Third Street.

Vegetables or fruit?  Edible?  I must admit that I am not familiar with these two.

Whole Foods at Third Avenue and Third Street in Gowanus may impress some with its rooftop greenhouse, where Gotham Greens grows salad and tomatoes, but local residents seem to have just as much of a green thumb growing a rather surprising variety of fresh produce in and around the neighborhood.

Just take a look at some of these cucumbers, melons, peppers, and tomatoes.  Even kale seems to thrive in sidewalk containers in Gowanus.
I am not familiar with the two exotic looking fruits/ vegetables from the container garden on Hoyt Street.  Are they edible?  Does anyone know what they are?

A Nasty Parking Surprise For One Car Owner In Gowanus

These days, finding a parking spot on the streets of South Brooklyn is a stroke of luck.
However, the driver of this red Ford Escape may not have felt quite so lucky yesterday, as the ground seemed to have caved beneath his vehicle. The car was parked on 3rd Avenue between Third Street and First Street at around lunchtime. The front wheel on the driver's side was halfway submerged in a huge pothole that must have opened up after the car had been parked. One of the back wheels had lifting off the roadway as the vehicle had begun to tilt.
I walked past the spot later in the day and the car had been towed. A few traffic cones were placed around the pothole.
Let's see how long it will take the City to fill it.

Friend Pearl Lau sent this funny photo of a scooter that has been decorated (or camouflaged) with greenery for the holidays.  It was parked at the corner of Henry Street and Sackett Street.  Pearl calls it "Motorcy-tree!"

"Urgent! Have Ready Cash!": New House Buying Scheme In The Neighborhood

Many of you may remember the slightly unprofessional hand-written note that was sent to some Brooklyn homeowners by a realtor named Jason, who was 'very interested' in buying property in the area.

It would appear that someone else is trying the same approach, although the letter from this "interested buyer" seems just a wee bit  creepier.  

The letter pictured above was left in front of every home on a block in Cobble Hill. It is marked "Urgent", and the word is repeated in bold inside the letter.  

Obviously, this approach to buying up real estate in the neighborhood can work, but the tone of the entire letter is really off-putting.

What do you think?

SMART Flower Power On Second Street

This little flowery Smart car with Oregon license plates drew the attention of many passers-by on Second Street at the corner of Smith Street yesterday. Quite a few people took out their phones to take photos. A day earlier, it was parked on Smith Street.

Since everyone seemed to enjoy the post about 1970's Hipsters so much, here are some more Brooklyn street fashions, this time from May 1987.
The article and photos above appeared in The Phoenix, "the hometown newspaper of downtown Brooklyn's historic brownstone neighborhoods" that was published weekly from 1972 to 1998. According to reporter, Kathryn Kirk, "the Streets of Brooklyn Heights, Park Slope and Any City, USA, are filled with people in athletic attire. Sweat pants are the most recent fashion statement. Running shoes are de rigueur. T-shirts have evolved into an art form."

The captions that go with the photos are rather amusing.

And where did the 1980's Brooklyn Fashionista shop?  Well at A&S on Fulton Street and at Benetton and Two To Tango in Brooklyn Heights of course.
