This Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 10:00 AM, members of Friends and Residents of Greater Gowanus, a non-for-profit, community based organization will be hosting a very special walking tour of Gowanus. Author and historian Joseph Alexiou will also be on hand.
Don't miss this event. It is bound to be fascinating.

Walk the landscape and the bridges of Brooklyn’s famous coastal harbor inlet with members of FROGG: Friends and Residents of Greater Gowanus. Hear stories of old from tour guide Joseph Alexiou, author of the newly published book, Gowanus: Brooklyn’s Curious Canal. Learn how community planning and grassroots interactions have given shape to a future Gowanus, and experience firsthand the present-day impacts of Mayor de Blasio’s first experimental “high-rise affordable housing” now towering over the low-rise, early industrial district of the Gowanus Canal.

Take Part In Free "TEDx Gowanus Instameet Up" Tour This Saturday

By now, you have probably heard about TEDxGowanus, an independently organized TED event, which will be held at The Green Building at 452 Union Street and at 501 Union Street in Gowanus on January 26th, 2014. The theme of this all-day event is "Inspiring Community". It will bring together area designers, entrepreneurs, artists, historians, and community leaders to share ideas and discuss a full range of topics from the neighborhood's history, industry, ecology, to evolution.

This Saturday at 2 PM, author, historian and friend Joseph Alexiou is leading an "Instameet Up" tour of the Gowanus Canal. The historical tour will provide a sneak peak of some of the topics the TEDxGowanus conference will cover! Participants will be encouraged to Instagram what they see during the walk.

Here is more information from the organizers:
Get a FREE sneak peek of what's to come at TEDxGowanus with this exclusive tour of the neighborhood, led by TEDxGowanus speaker and co-curator, Joseph Alexiou.
The tour is focused on NYC industrial history (given Gowanus's industrial legacy), but will also touch on early Dutch history and the Revolutionary War.
Stops visited will include:
The Gowanus flushing tunnel
Green Building
Carroll Street Bridge
Third Street Buildings - The Bat Cave, The Coignet Building, and the Old American Can Factory
And more!

We encourage attendees to bring cameras and phones and snap photos tagged with #gowanusinspired. Some tagged photos will be selected to appear at the TEDxGowanus event on 1/26/14.

Attending this event will be many of the organizers for TEDxGowanus, so come out and start conversations that will no doubt ripple through to the event!

You can sign up for the tour on TEDxGowanu's Facebook page here.
