Great news!

In June, award-winning Brooklyn theatre company Smith Street Stage will once again bring Shakespeare to Carroll Park in Carroll Gardens. Since 2010, their free, open-air productions have included Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest, Henry IV, Twelfth Night, Julius Caesar, Much Ado About Nothing, Macbeth and Richard III.

For its tenth year, the Company will be performing Romeo and Juliet, which was also their first show in Carroll Park. The show, as in years past, will be absolutely free.
To help Smith Street Stage put on these amazing productions, the company will be hosting a Summer Kick-Off  Fundraiser at East One Brooklyn on Court Street on Friday, June 7th from 6pm to 10pm.

Meet the cast of Romeo and Juliet from 6 to 7:30 pm, and at 8 pm, take part in Shakespeare/Game of Thrones trivia and support this wonderful company, so that they can continue to delight us with free Shakespeare in Carroll Park

Smith Street Stage, the brilliant theatre company that brings Shakespeare to Carroll Park ever summer, is hosting a Midwinter Wassail on December 3th at The Actors Fund, 160 Schermerhorn Street between Smith and Hoyt Street, Brooklyn.
Join Smith Street Stagefor their third annual fundraising 'extravaganza', which will help support all of  the company's  programming in the next year, including the free performances in Carroll Park.

Once again,  award-winning Brooklyn theatre company Smith Street Stage will be bringing Shakespeare to Carroll Park here in Carroll Gardens for two weeks this summer.  Since 2010, their
free, open-air productions have included Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest, Henry IV, Twelfth Night, Julius Caesar, Much Ado About Nothing, Macbeth.
This summer, Smith Street Stage has chosen to perform Richard III, a play about the short lived reign of the 15th-century British monarch that is as timely today as when it was written.

From Smith Street Stage: 

Richard III tells the story of a country in turmoil and a madman lusting for power. As the ruthless and charismatic Richard claws his way to the throne, a nation is forced to the breaking point in this chilling tale of a tyrant, his enablers, and those who attempt to resist.

Richard III is directed by Jonathan Hopkins and features Brendan Cataldo* as Clarence, Raquel Chavez as Anne, Justin Crowley as Edward, Shaun Bennet Fauntleroy as Elizabeth, Michael Hanson as Richard, Eleanor McCormick as Catesby, Oliver Palmer as Brakenbury, Nowani Rattray as Richmond, Danny Rivera as Stanley, Chloe Ross as the Prince, Kate Ross as Margaret, Corey Whelihan as Hastings, and Katie Willmorth as Buckingham.

Performances will take place in Carroll Park from June 7 through June 27, Wednesdays through Sundays at 7:30pm.

Smith Street Stage encourages everyone to arrive half an hour prior to curtain time. A limited number of chairs will be available, but please feel free to bring your own lawn chairs and/or picnic blankets. Admission is free. No tickets are necessary. The performance is family-friendly, so bring the kids.

For the past seven years, award-winning theatre company Smith Street Stage has brought Shakespeare to Carroll Park to the delight of everyone in the community. Previous productions include Romeo and Juliet, Cesar, Twelfth Night and Henry IV. Each has been masterfully acted, visually stunning and uses the park as a beautiful backdrop.

The outdoor performances are absolutely free and are family-friendly. The show runs June 8 through 26, excluding Mondays and Tuesdays. All performances start at 7:30pm.

The celebrated Brooklyn theatre company, Smith Street Stage, will return to Carroll Park to present its annual outdoor production of a play by William Shakespeare. This summer’s production will be The Tempest, playing from June 8 through 26. Admission is free. No tickets are required.

The Tempest is a classic story of love, magic, and revenge, all set on a mysterious enchanted island. Smith Street Stage is thrilled to bring that island to Brooklyn’s Carroll Park, and with it our commitment to creating opportunities for women. In this production, the leading role of Prospero will be played by Kate Ross.

Brooklyn’s Smith Street Stage is proud to continue its summertime tradition of presenting outdoor Shakespeare-under-the-stars in Carroll Park. (Theatre-goers from other NYC boroughs are welcome).

Theatre-goers are encouraged to arrive 30 minutes prior to curtain time. The stage will be set at the east end of Brooklyn’s beautiful Carroll Park, along Smith Street. Ground seating is open to the public, as well as a limited number of chairs. Many theatre-goers bring picnic blankets, some bring chairs of their own.

As The Tempest begins, the magician Prospero sends out a storm to shipwreck the traitorous men who once stole her throne and exiled her to a desolate island. When the island’s mysteries entrap and confound the men, Prospero wreaks her revenge. Meanwhile, her daughter Miranda discovers the “brave new world” of true love. The Tempest is a world of enchantment and storytelling not to be missed.

Smith Street Stage was founded in 2010, with a mission to present affordable, exciting and consequential theater arts to a diverse audience. Starting with a five actor adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, Smith Street Stage has always looked for new ways to tell classic stories. Since that first production the company has grown to hiring over twenty artists and performing summer Shakespeare for over two thousand people each summer in Brooklyn’s Carroll Park. On Monday, May 16, 2016 at 6 pm, Nightingale 9 at 329 Smith Street is hosting a very special summer benefit evening in support of Friends of Carroll Park and of Smith Street Stage, which have been bringing Shakespeare plays to our park for the past several years.

This June 8 through June 26th, Smith Street Stage's actors will present its seventh annual installment of the Shakespeare in Carroll Park series by performing "The Tempest".
The benefit will support our lovely neighborhood park as well as the free Shakespeare performances.

This Summer, Smith Street Stage Brings Shakespeare's Henry IV To Carroll Park

This summer, Smith Street Stage, the wonderful Brooklyn-based theater company that has been bringing Shakespeare to Carroll Park since 2010, will be performing Henry IV Part 1 and 2 this summer. And as in years past, the performances will be absolutely free. All you have to do is to show up and bring your own chair.

This thoroughly modern production of "Henry IV" will be directed by Joby Earle. The cast includes Michael Hanson, Beth Ann Hopkins, Jonathan Hopkins, Jane May, Jonathan Minton, Lauren Pennline, Sam Reiff-Pasarew and Hannah Sloat.

From director Joby Earle:
"One of the things that most strikes me reading Shakespeare’s two part Henry IV is the distinct impression that one generation is on its way in, as another is on its way out. Everywhere I identify a country in transition, sometimes subtly and sometimes abruptly, but always the ground underfoot is shifting in a way that, for a multitude of reasons, reminds me of our current times. What is harder to identify, in the play and in our lives, is how these changes take root in a people’s thinking, acting and relating to one another. Usually in times of great transformation, we instinctively fight to keep our self, our values, and our ideals fixed, unbroken by the chaos of world events. The play examines the inevitability of change, and our deeply revealing struggle to try to hold firm or adapt.
The two parts of Henry IV deal with the sequence of such a transition in very different ways, and both seemed essential in wrestling with the questions of what’s gained and what’s lost. As such, Smith Street Stage will produce both parts, in repertory, on alternate evenings, with select nights featuring both plays back to back."
