American Apparel On Smith Street Could Use Some Help With Its Window Display

Granted, my days as a fashion designer on 7th Avenue go back a long time now, so I am not be au courant with the latest styles as I once was, but in the last few weeks, every time I walk past the American Apparel on Smith Street, the window mannequins are wearing such mismatched, frumpy outfits, that it looks a bit like a second hand store.

The retailer's second neighborhood location on Court Street in Brooklyn Heights doesn't look any better. I checked yesterday.

Is it just a Brooklyn thing? Do the windows of the Manhattan locations look better?

Don't get me wrong, I actually like American Apparel's simple cotton basics. Somehow, though, the window displays on Court And Smith seems to miss the mark and don't seem to reflect the clean style of the merchandise in the store.

Any thoughts?

Across From the 360 Smith Street Site, Frank's Luncheonette Gets "Beautified"

Dear Reader,
You may have noticed it on your way to the subway station this morning. But in case you didn't, Frank's Luncheonette, Pizzeria and Café ( yes, they cover all their bases) has a new awning.
And guess what? It actually looks really nice. Hurray for Frank's!

Did SUR Finally Bite The Dust On Smith?

Part of the first wave of new restaurants to open on Smith Street about 10 years ago, this Argentinian restaurant has been dying a slow, slow death. Originally, Sur was housed diagonally across the street in a one story building which was bulldozed to make way for new construction (which has yet to start.)
In its new location at the corner of Butler, the restaurant never regained its momentum. And that is a nice way of putting it. Over the last few years, there were hardly any customers in the restaurant. On an otherwise busy Friday night on Smith Street, this place was just dead.
How the establishment stayed in business was a mystery to everyone who lives in the neighborhood.
I therefore was not surprised to see the place totally stripped and a dumpster on Butler Street filled with what once made up Sur.
The question only remains: is Sur coming back with a new and improved decor or has it finally bit the dust?

Neighbor Envy On Dean Street

On Dean Street right off Smith Street, there was a very cute little house. It fit in nicely between its neighbors, though it was smaller. And that was no good because envy took hold. The owner thought it should be as tall as the others. So you see, he added a floor made of shiny new metal. And three small square windows were added as well. So now it's as tall as the house by its side. The owner must really be proud!
