Movie Screening And "Spring Sing" Karaoke At Carroll Park This Week-End

Carroll Park will be quite busy this week-end with a number of great activities sure to please and put a smile on everyone's face.

Friends of Carroll Park, the all-volunteer organization that has been lovingly tending to our neighborhood oasis for the past few decades, is hosting a movie and a sing-along karaoke night.

Here are the details:

MUSICAL MOVIE: "ON THE TOWN"

FRIDAY, APRIL 17, 8:00 p.m.

"You may have seen the current hit Broadway revival, now come see the hilarious big screen adaptation starring Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Ann Miller, and Betty Garrett. We won't stop you from singing along to Leonard Bernstein classics like "New York, New York" and "Come Up To My Place." In fact, we encourage it!"

"SPRING SING" KARAOKE PARTY

SATURDAY, APRIL 18, 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Party with friends and neighbors in front of the Robert Acito Park House and sing some of your favorites with Lion's Roar Karaoke and their 10,000 song library.

Suggested donation of $1/song to benefit Friends of Carroll Park.

And of course, the BARK AVENUE PET ADOPT-A-THON is this SUNDAY, APRIL 19, 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.

Seems like NBC is filming in the neighbor hood twice. Today, "The Blacklist" is shooting a scene
on 4th Place between Court and Clinton Streets.
Tomorrow, "The Slap", a new show with Peter Sarsgaard and Mary-Louise Parker will be shooting on Smith Street near Atlantic Avenue.

It also explores the issues that are threatening neighborhood stores - the large chains, high rents, and public policy, among others. Once Upon A Time, Gina Lollobrigida Was From Brooklyn

Get out! Did you know that once upon a time, Gina Lollobrigida played a Brooklynite? That's hard to believe, right? But she did , in Anna Di Brooklyn. The movie was also known as Fast And Sexy! Isn't that a hoot?
Made in Italy in 1958, it was directed by Vittorio DeSica who also has a small role as the village priest. I just have to see this movie. Would you happen to know where I can find a copy?

In this occasionally amusing frolic, Gina Lollobrigida plays a sexy widow who returns to Italy from New York following the death of her husband. Her wealth and good looks entice all the men in her small village except for the one she really wants, the town blacksmith (Dale Robertson). Giuseppe Rotunno's warm cinematography and the irresistible Lollobrigida make this one worth seeing, while the screenplay (by Ettore Margadonna, Luciana Corda, and Joseph Stefano) manages to be clever without being smirky. Look for a funny bit by Vittorio DeSica, who supervised some scenes, as a loquacious priest. This film is also known as both Anna of Brooklyn and Fast and Sexy. ~

"When I Came Home" Screening

I just received an email about a worthwhile movie that I think we should all try to watch.
When I Came Home tells the story about a young Iraq veteran who comes home to Brooklyn with some extra baggage: Post Stress Disorder. Living out of his car, he tries to navigate the complex system of the Veterans Affairs Bureau to fight for what was promised to him in exchange for his service to his country. the film is directed by Dan Lohaus

When I Came Home is a documentary film about homeless veterans in America: from those who served in Vietnam to those returning from the current war in Iraq. The film looks at the challenges faced by returning combat veterans and the battle many must fight to receive their benefits from the Veterans Administration.

Through the story of Herold Noel, a homeless Iraq war veteran suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and living out of his car in Brooklyn, the film reveals a failing system and the veteran’s struggle to survive after returning from the war. When I Came Home follows Herold’s battle with homelessness and PTSD as he tries to get help from the VA, city agencies, and various veterans organizations.

With temperatures dropping in New York, Herold meets fellow vet Paul Rieckhoff, founder of the country’s largest Iraq veteran advocacy organization. What follows is a media blitz that transforms the young, homeless veteran into the leader of a new movement.

I just got an email from Screening Liberally about the movie ASPARAGUS
( A Stalk-umentary). I had not heard about it before, but it looks pretty interesting. It was directed by filmmakers Anne de Mare and Kirsten Kelly and has won quite a few awards at film festivals. Here is the info in case you want to attend the screening
