Marquet Patisserie Turns Twenty!

oo

Marquet Patisserie is celebrating its 20th year in business. Though they have been on Court Street for quite a while, Marquet was one of the very first places of business on Smith Street when it was still funky. The owners were real pioneers. They opened up shop before any other restaurant had a presence on the strip.
I remember our surprise and thrill discovering this bakery for the first time. The Smith Street storefront was larger I think and they still did all the baking in the back.

Ah, those where the days!

then they closed the retail and continued just a bakery with blank store front ...so they were certainly contributed to part of the funkiness of Smith st.

now the baking's done in bushwick. the owner seems to have a knack for being one of the first to settle down in an "up and coming."

They are nice but the french husband owner made a huge snub to smith street. When he moved to court street, he said his business is 1000 times better than on smith. Yes, I was happy they came to then sleepy smith, but, the service has gone way down hill and the actual pastry is sticky and gummy. I am partial, now, to the Provence en boite croissant. Flaky and more like France. The coffe at Marquet is awful and watery. And this guy is French? Shame on him. Perhaps he thinks us dumb american's don't know any better. N'est pas?

I was an avid customer of Marquet Patisserie from its days on Smith Street, but the quality has completely gone down. the cakes are overly sweet, gooey, And in no way do they retain any French pastry qualities. Additionally, they do not know how to package a large cake (in the Fort Green store) to be carried comfortably. And worst of all I found a shell with an attached wire in my recent cake. I think it was meant to hold a decorative rose in place, but I was not forewarned, and damaged my gum. This place is definitely on my 'no-way' list!

I bought a strawberry cupcake the other day. Outside looked pretty but it has full of disgusting green mold inside!!!!!! I don't know how long it was sitting there... I went to return it and found out the lady who was working there in the morning charged me more than she should've (it's supposed to be $2.75/pc but she told me it's $3). I would NEVER go back!!!!

Considering how good Marquet used to be and how much it has deteriorated, does anyone know of a good Pastry shop in Clinton Hill/Fort Greene/Cobble Hill area?

Ember, Betty's on Atlantic Ave near Nevins is a pretty good bakery. Cash only, though.
