Did SUR Finally Bite The Dust On Smith?

oo

Part of the first wave of new restaurants to open on Smith Street about 10 years ago, this Argentinian restaurant has been dying a slow, slow death. Originally, Sur was housed diagonally across the street in a one story building which was bulldozed to make way for new construction (which has yet to start.)
In its new location at the corner of Butler, the restaurant never regained its momentum. And that is a nice way of putting it. Over the last few years, there were hardly any customers in the restaurant. On an otherwise busy Friday night on Smith Street, this place was just dead.
How the establishment stayed in business was a mystery to everyone who lives in the neighborhood.
I therefore was not surprised to see the place totally stripped and a dumpster on Butler Street filled with what once made up Sur.
The question only remains: is Sur coming back with a new and improved decor or has it finally bit the dust?

even across street - service was horrible.
At this location was called Provencale or something like that ofr quite awhile before taking Sur name.

They had a crazy Saturday night thing where they'd bring in a Cuban band and there would be dancing. The bar was managed oddly to say the least. The money was just thrown on the back counter in a heap (the cash register was long gone) and I wasn't sure where the limes or the ice were coming from.

Back when it was Provencal, it wasn't horrible. It was actually a nice space and there was even a downstairs club that they tried to start. Didn't work though (kind of like that downstairs club the Asian fusion restaurant has and never opened)

I actually liked SUR 1.0, and when they moved the manager gave me a tour of the "soon to be opened" downstairs club - which was an amazing space. I really could picture myself taking a date there. Alas the club never opened, and the place tanked.

As for Asian Fusion club, that place was pretty cool, but looks like "unsavory types" [see sign still above the door - no hats, t-shirts, etc] took over and it soon closed. Would this be the fate of any lounge/date spot to open on smith? ...or will the new bar coming on smith and sackett become the new lounge bar the street sorely needs?

We always thought that SUR was some kind of front. Every time we walked past the place, it was empty except for a forlorn employee or two. When there were people sitting in the restaurant, we frequently commented that the must be from out of the neighborhood. I am only amazed that it has managed to stay open for this long.
