'Brooklyn Is Like Brussels...in its Approval of the First Steel-Body Station Wagon.'
Well, maybe not, but that was the hook in this 1950's advertisement for the Willy Jeep Station wagon. Part of the text reads:
On city streets and country roads of five continents, you'll meet 'Jeep' Station Wagons. The whole world has welcomed them, because they meet a universal need for wide usefulness and economical operation.
That is the funniest thing. Brooklyn....Brussels? I can just imagine those advertisement genius' patting themselves on the back in the 50's, proud of coming up with that slogan.
( By the way, the ad mentions economical operation. Does anyone out there know what the fuel consumption of that vehicle was ?)
Here is more on the Willys on Wikipedia:
The Willys Jeep Station Wagon is the first all-steel station wagon and is arguably the world's first sport utility vehicle (SUV). It was designed in 1946 by industrial designer Brooks Stevens and stayed in production until 1963. The steel body was efficient to mass-produce, as easy to maintain and safer than the real wood-bodied station wagon versions at the time. This was one of Willys most successful post-World War II models. Its production coincided with the move to the new suburbs during the post-war period. This model was also assembled in several international markets under various forms of joint ventures, licenses, or Complete knock down kits.
