" Me And My Egg Roll" (And Mice?) Oh My!

oo

Me and My Egg Roll at 407 Court Street

I always loved the name of this Chinese restaurant. The food? Well, not so much. 'Me and My Egg Roll' has been at the same location for all of the twenty-four years I have been living in the neighborhood. It was only closed for a few months a couple of years ago, when the side wall of the building was rebuilt.) I am not too fussy when it comes to food. I have eaten in some funky places in some exotic locales, but the last New York City Health Report for this restaurant made me a bit ill . The average health violation for a restaurant in the city is 16 points. Well, at its last inspection on January 8, 2009, Me and My Egg Roll accumulated 81 points. Here is an excerpt from the report.

Facility not vermin proof.
Harborage or conditions conducive to vermin exist.
Food not protected from potential source of contamination during storage, preparation, transportation, display or service.
Evidence of roaches or live roaches present in facility's food and/or non-food areas.

Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility's food and/or non-food areas.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced last weekend that the city is updating its restaurant inspection system in an effort to improve sanitary conditions and give consumers more information.Customers will soon be able to tell what grade any of the city’s 25,000 restaurants received in their most recent health inspection simply by glancing at a sign posted in the window or doorway.
One hopes that 'Me And My Egg Roll' will clean up its act before then

The City needs to make a distinction between "food and/or non-food areas." That's a big difference. Are they in the boiler room or in the stir fry? Shouldn't one be punished a wee bit harsher than the other?

The distinction between "food and/or non-food areas" is irrelevant. If you have live critters in the "food area," what makes you think they won't be walking around in the "non-food areas" when the establishment is closed for the night??

Any good restaurant will clean their food working areas before each service. The Prep Service, the Meal Service & Post Meal Service/Nightly Clean-up.
Please Note: If you live in Carroll Gardens then you've had a mouse walk on your kitchen counter at night, at least once a month. If they're renovating the house next door, then more often - Trust me, it happens.
However, restaurant owners are trained and are in the habit of Scrubbing Down every food area during each of the 3 times I noted above. You Should, too! And Chineese cooking, by the nature of it, has the wok cleaned after EACH meal is prepared in it.
Again, when you live in a building that has been around since the 1860's then YOU have had a mouse in your kitchen, whether you saw it or not.
{Besides, there has been a rash of complaints about Inspectors in Carroll Gardens lately. It seems the Multi-Owner, hot-shot, newer places PAY for their great inspection ratings - the OLD Timers do/will Not!}

Wow. It looks like they should have used some mouse traps, like one of those Multi-Kills, that can kill up to 10 mice before a reset. Remind me never to eat there again.
