The Former "Me And My Egg Roll" Storefront On Court Street Getting A Lovely Make-Over

A few days ago, PMFA wrote about the loss of the lovely vintage sign for Marietta's, the former women's and men's clothing store that had been run by one family for decades. Many in the neighborhood seemed genuinely sad, including me.
To make up for the depressing news, here is a neighborhood highlight to make us all feel better.

For 34 years, Me and My Egg Roll, a Chinese restaurant, had occupied the ground floor of a building at 407 Court Street at the corner of Second Place. Its exterior was not particularly appealing and the actual dining area always seemed desolate, as the place did most of its business via take-out orders.Since Me and My Egg Roll closed in January 2015, the storefront has been empty.

A few readers reached out over the past two weeks to say that the place was being worked on. They were also wondering what kind of business would be replacing the Chinese eatery.
I walked past 407 Court Street yesterday and was truly impressed by the transformation of the storefront.  The entrance to the store now has a beautiful cornice and some nice wood detail.

The very nice worker on the site proudly showed off his work outside and inside and allowed me to take a few photos. The interior space has been transformed very nicely as well. From the looks of it,
the new business will sell home decor items.

What do you think of the transformation?

"Me And My Eggroll" Going (Partly) Vietnamese On Court

'Me And My Eggroll' at 407 Court Street, one of Carroll Gardens oldest Chinese restaurants, has gone partly Vietnamese by adding bubble teas and Vietnamese sandwiches. Yesterday was the grand opening of their 're-designed' restaurant space, which had gone mostly unused for years, since Me and My Eggroll is known primarily as a take-out place. Though the decor doesn't look much different than before, some rather brightly colored lights and a new lit menu sign have been added.

What do you think? Any hope that their Vietnamese offerings will be better than their Chinese food? Or should we stick to Hanco on Bergen?

" Me And My Egg Roll" (And Mice?) Oh My!

Me and My Egg Roll at 407 Court Street

I always loved the name of this Chinese restaurant. The food? Well, not so much. 'Me and My Egg Roll' has been at the same location for all of the twenty-four years I have been living in the neighborhood. It was only closed for a few months a couple of years ago, when the side wall of the building was rebuilt.) I am not too fussy when it comes to food. I have eaten in some funky places in some exotic locales, but the last New York City Health Report for this restaurant made me a bit ill . The average health violation for a restaurant in the city is 16 points. Well, at its last inspection on January 8, 2009, Me and My Egg Roll accumulated 81 points. Here is an excerpt from the report.

Facility not vermin proof.
Harborage or conditions conducive to vermin exist.
Food not protected from potential source of contamination during storage, preparation, transportation, display or service.
Evidence of roaches or live roaches present in facility's food and/or non-food areas.

Evidence of mice or live mice present in facility's food and/or non-food areas.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced last weekend that the city is updating its restaurant inspection system in an effort to improve sanitary conditions and give consumers more information.Customers will soon be able to tell what grade any of the city’s 25,000 restaurants received in their most recent health inspection simply by glancing at a sign posted in the window or doorway.
One hopes that 'Me And My Egg Roll' will clean up its act before then
