Old OTB All Fenced In On Court Street. Could Oyster Bar Still Be In The Works?

oo

Once upon a time, there was talk that an oyster bar would open in the old OTB space at 320 Court Street, at the corner of Sackett place. That was in the fall of 2007. "Huître" as it was presumably going to be called, never opened.
Work has continued sporadically over the last few years, but no restaurant ever opened, though a glimpse inside the space in June 2009 revealed a beautiful tiled kitchen area.

But there finally seems to be some movement at that location. Over the week-end and on Monday morning, workers were erecting a brand new plywood construction fence. Also, some brand new NYC Department of Buildings permits have issued recently.
A liquor license for Huitre was approved in 2008, but will expire at the end of March.

So, dear Reader, it remains to be seen if Huitre does finally open, or if someone else has taken over and will open a different eating establishment.
Stay tuned.

Wasn't the oyster bar proposed for Hoyt Street?

There was supposed to be an oyster bar here too.
'Huître' means oyster in French.

But, as I said, this could have been taken over by someone else.

It is going to be a french restaurant from what I have always heard. The owner of the future restaurant owns the building and is taking his sweet time, as he can afford to most likely.

Although I'm not a big fan of French Food, I am a very big fan and supporter of Restaurants owned by the same person/people who own the building.

It takes a good amount of time for a business (especailly a restaurant) to get a foot hold in any neighborhood. When you have a landlord breathing down your neck for rent (especailly if your lease is based on a % of the take - as many new leases are based) you tend to take shortcuts in favor of profits. This is a HORRIBLE thing, especially when it comes to restaurants!
However, if the restaurant & building has the same owner (and if said owner has a good handle on the mortgage) the place will have time to develope.
In time, this new Bon Jour Cafe can become a long standing Carroll Gardens establishment - like Sams, Red Rose, Vinny's. The REAL neighborhood success stories! Heck, I may even learn to enjoy snails!

Hi Katia,

LOL - I have no idea, but that's about all French I know.

But if it does get named that could you see to it that I get a commission?

(By the way- I heard your friend from Lost City has been in touch with Mrs Dees re: neighborhood history)

Katia,

By the way, whatever that space is going to be, it's going to be BIG.

That's a very long space. OTB seemed very "small" but all of the offcies & all of the money was keep in the back. I understand that the place already has a bar longer than most in C.G. - yet with plenty of table space.

(I just hope it will BE a restaurant, NOT just a bar!)

{either way, I get a commission if they end-up calling it the Bon Jour Cafe! LOL}

I'll be very happy to see something new open in the old OTB space. It's been empty too long. I just wonder who on here remembers when above the OTB there used to be an " Escort" service ~ and Escort is used very very loosely! LOL Whatever opens, hopefully will be someone & something nice & long term.
