Scenes From Coney Island's Mermaid Parade 2010

oo

It was rather hot as crowds lined Surf Avenue in Coney Island to watch the yearly Mermaid Parade this last Saturday. The floats and the costumes were fun and imaginative as always. Though certainly a spirited affair, many an 'oil' covered mermaid or sea creature in the parade confirmed that the BP oil spill disaster in the Gulf was a common concern.
Lou Read and Laurie Anderson, this year's King and Queen, were enthusiastically greeted as they passed by.
Yes, Coney Island is not what it used to be, but the place still offers quite a spectacle.

Nice to see you there Katia! I think people love Coney no matter what is happening cause there is always the beach. It's the peoples playground and Bloomie hates that! Anyway,i hope your eye is healing..i got pinkeye in June a few years ago and it was awful. I went to an optomologist and antibiotics cleared it right up.

Hi Lisanne,
Yes, it was great bumping into you at the parade.
I knew you wouldn't miss it.
We had a great time. Everyone went on the Cyclone, but I gladly stayed behind to hold the bags. I went on there once 26 years ago and swore that I would not do it a second time.
We actually had really great Mexican tacos at one of the stalls. Would go there again. Much better than Nathan and its over-prized hot dogs.
Thanks for asking about the eye. Its much better now. At least I can see.
