Last night at about 8:30 Pm, my husband and I took a walk down Smith Street and walked by the Gowanus Yacht Club at 323 Smith Street. It was busy as usual. When we walked by about an hour later, it was empty, the lights were off and the entrance was closed. It seemed strange, but I didn't give it another thought.
This morning, I found an email by Bill W in my inbox. He writes:
Gowanus Yacht Club Closed! this is serious news. Looks like it was closed by the health department, something about proximity to the subway.
It is strange that the Health Department would show up at night to close the place down. However, just this last week, the Union Smith Café a few doors down at 305 Smith Street, was also closed by the Health Department. It has since reopened.
Does anyone have further information or was anyone at the Gowanus Yacht Club when it was ordered closed?
****UPDATE****
Just walked by the Gowanus Yacht Club and sure enough, there is a chain locking the gate to the entrance. Bagels By The Park is also closed. A hand written note and a sticker by the Health Department on the window confirms what reader Bill wrote in his email.
Stay tuned.
***Saturday Afternoon Update***:
The bagel place is still closed, but the Gowanus Yacht Club is open again and was rather crowded at about 4 Pm on Saturday afternoon. The yellow sticker from the Department Of Health was still taped to the window of the bagel store.

if that's the case, then that would be terrible.
checked their facebook page but there have been no updates.
when i returned to brooklyn and emerged from carroll station last night at around 10:40 pm, i thought i saw folks milling about but i have to admit that i wasn't really paying attention.
very mysterious.
Couldn't have happened to a nicer place.
Seems that the closing was only temporary, it was going full swing this afternoon at about 230p and this evening at around 7pm still going strong. Heard that the Health Dept. went along Smith Street yesterday and gave all the food and drink establishments a fine or closure notice. Don't know for sure but that's what a few people were saying
I'm pretty sure the Yacht Club/Bagels by the Park and Union Smith Cafe are all owned by the same people. Sounds like they might have pissed of the wrong person at the health dept...
Who knows why Bagels by the park is closed, however, it has been in that location for years, and NOW it has something to do with the proximatey of the store to the subway?? That does not sound right at all.
Can't say I'm surprised re: GYC; it's a nice idea but if they actually prepare the food down in that sewer-like area where the disgusting bathrooms are, this was just a matter of time
I know the GYC is a scene. I went there only once. It was gross. I'll never be back.
Bagels By The Park is the only place in the neighborhood where you can get a onion egg bagel..and they are soooo good...
