Co-Owner Jim Mamary On Site Fixing Violations?

***UPDATE***
As of Wednesday afternoon, Bagels By The Park and
the Gowanus Yacht Club were open again.

The Gowanus Yacht Club and Bagels By The Park at 323 Smith Street were shut-down by the NYC Department Of Health on Friday evening during an inspection. A big orange sticker was placed prominently on the bagel store's front door. The owners taped their own message to customers in the window, stating that the bagel store has been closed because of problems with their yard.
Both remain closed, though the Yacht Club re-opened for business on Sunday to admit crowds during the US-England game. (Conveniently, the Health Department sticker was covered up during that time.)

Today, there were some workers fixing and cleaning up in the yard. It would appear that former power-restaurateur and Yacht Club co-owner Mr. Jim Mamary was on site himself with tools in hand, most probably fixing violations.

Gowanus Yacht Club (AND Bagels By The Park) Closed By Health Department Last Night?

IMG_4783

IMG_4783

Last night at about 8:30 Pm, my husband and I took a walk down Smith Street and walked by the Gowanus Yacht Club at 323 Smith Street. It was busy as usual. When we walked by about an hour later, it was empty, the lights were off and the entrance was closed. It seemed strange, but I didn't give it another thought.

This morning, I found an email by Bill W in my inbox. He writes:

Gowanus Yacht Club Closed! this is serious news. Looks like it was closed by the health department, something about proximity to the subway.

It is strange that the Health Department would show up at night to close the place down. However, just this last week, the Union Smith Café a few doors down at 305 Smith Street, was also closed by the Health Department. It has since reopened.

Does anyone have further information or was anyone at the Gowanus Yacht Club when it was ordered closed?

****UPDATE****

Just walked by the Gowanus Yacht Club and sure enough, there is a chain locking the gate to the entrance. Bagels By The Park is also closed. A hand written note and a sticker by the Health Department on the window confirms what reader Bill wrote in his email.
Stay tuned.

***Saturday Afternoon Update***:

The bagel place is still closed, but the Gowanus Yacht Club is open again and was rather crowded at about 4 Pm on Saturday afternoon. The yellow sticker from the Department Of Health was still taped to the window of the bagel store.

After Short Break, 'Bagels By The Park' Back, With Slightly New Decor

About two weeks ago, I received a few emails from readers, who reported that "Bagels By The Park" at 323 Smith Street, a popular early morning stop for many F train riders, was closed.
Turned out that the place was only closed for vacation. But when the bagel place reopened during this last week-end, it became apparent that the place has been spruced up. The new lighting and newly exposed beams look very nice.

No, No! " Bagels By The Park" Not Closing...Just Taking A Vacation

My email box started filling up with messages from readers early Friday morning. "Any idea what is happening over at Bagels By The Park? They were closed this morning, when I walked by." wrote one person. Another reader reported that " the windows were taped up, when I tried to get my coffee. What's going on?" And a third asked "Hey, Katia, you mostly know what's happening in the neighborhood. Do you know why the bagel joint is closed?"

Frankly, I had no clue, so I took my camera over to # 323 Smith Street, at the corner of President Street. Yes, it is true that the place where most neighborhood residents buy their morning java on their way to the F train, is closed.
It seems that Carroll Gardeners will need to get their brew and bagel someplace else, but ...only until September 7th. You see, the place is closed for vacation. That's all. Mystery solved!

More Smith Street History: In 1929, Instead Of Bagels And Beer, A Dentist And Lunch

323 Smith Street At President

323 Smith now

No bagels at 323 Smith Street back in 1928. No cheap beer in the side yard either. You see, before there was Bagels By The Park and the Gowanus Yacht Club, Park Restaurant and Lunch occupied the storefront. And if you should have needed a dentist, Dr. Kronman was on the second floor. Sometime between '28 and now, the place was home to the Park Lane Florist as you can see on the green sign still attached on the façade. And when I moved here in 1985, a car service dispatched their vehicles from there.
And 321 Smith, the current newsstand, was a meat market.

Again, my thanks go out to Alexandrea for sharing.
