Gowanus Nursery Relocating, But First, An Auction

oo

clip000b

Here is the perfect event for all Brooklyn gardeners.

Just a few years ago, the Gowanus Nursery relocated from Third Street near Hoyt Street to Summit Street in Red Hook. Then, shortly after the move, it looked as though the nursery would have to move once again because the lot it occupied was going to be developed.
That was in 2007. Obviously, the business was able to stay at the Summit Street location for three more summers.
However, as the flier above would indicate, Gowanus Nursery will be relocating, but before the move, an auction of shrubs, trees and containers will be held at the end of September, followed by a perennial auction.

The nursery's new location will be announced at an auction pre-view on September 24th.

Make sure to mark the event on your calendar and to check it out.

So... does this mean the development is going forward?? Yuck.

Hi Becky,
No word on that, but it is plausible that the construction is finally moving forward. Will try to find out.

Katia, was an announcement made about the nursery's new location? I don't recall seeing any follow up, and their website has no info. Thanks!

Hi Anon,
Sorry, I couldn't attend the event because I was out of town, so I don't know where they are relocating. I am surprised they did not place the info on the site.

Thanks Katia. Maybe they'll update their website soon. If they move farther than walking distance within CG, CHill or BHeights, then I'll miss them since I don't have a car.

I hear you. When they were located on 3rd Street close to the canal, I was there almost every week-end in the spring. It was a very costly habit, but the plants I bought at Gowanus Nursery are still thriving in my garden today.

I used to go to both locations and spent much money there. Rare bulbs from her still bloom and a rose vine still creeps. I was a regular. I stopped going last summer. The owner was such a crankster and nvee once said hello to me. Her employees were nice but she ruined everything.
I started using the green market more and Liberty Sunset. Her major competitors. Sorry Charlie.

Yes, it is a shame that the owner of the nursery is so disrespectful towards many customers. I have witnessed so many rude exchanges that I too don't wish to shop there anymore either. Her staff is nicer than she but her attitude permeates the experience. Too bad since she has such nice plants and seems to be quite knowledgeable.

There is a pile driver working on the site right now. A post-approval amendment was filed last May by Bricolage Designs (hate them.) But it was disapproved. Are they supposed to be working?

Just checked out the link.
Definitely no approval on the project yet.
How about a 311 call?

Just called in to 311:

I was assured by the rep that DOB will investigate within 40 days, yes 40. Darn building will be up by then.

40 days? They must be kidding. Quite a response time.

(That was two different anons there, in case anyone was confused! I think the second anon might be Katia, though.)

It looks like the information is filed under 49 and 51 Summit, even though it's the same location as 45. They are renaming it into two lots.

The application is for a 4-story, 3-family building. 45 feet high. 4,999 square feet.

Two other complaints about the pile driver have already been written off:
