Best news for all neighborhood gardeners and certain proof that spring is most definitely around the corner. After their yearly winter hiatus, the Gowanus Nursery is re-opening next week-end. I can hardly wait.

With many projects still under way, it is with sweat on our brow that we mention our opening date, March 23rd, 2013March hours: Saturday and Sunday 11-5 Early April Hours: 10-6 Thursday through Sunday.

Gowanus Nursery Relocating, But First, An Auction

Here is the perfect event for all Brooklyn gardeners.

Just a few years ago, the Gowanus Nursery relocated from Third Street near Hoyt Street to Summit Street in Red Hook. Then, shortly after the move, it looked as though the nursery would have to move once again because the lot it occupied was going to be developed.

That was in 2007. Obviously, the business was able to stay at the Summit Street location for three more summers.

However, as the flier above would indicate, Gowanus Nursery will be relocating, but before the move, an auction of shrubs, trees and containers will be held at the end of September, followed by a perennial auction.

The nursery's new location will be announced at an auction pre-view on September 24th.

Another Sure Sign Of Spring In the Neighborhood: Gowanus Nursery Opens This Week-End

Can't wait! The Gowanus Nursery is opening this Saturday, March 20th. I can imagine that the day has been eagerly anticipated by fellow gardeners like me. Just in the last two days, I have been outside working in the front garden, clearing away the dead leaves from last fall and pruning my roses. Oh, and it felt so great.

Unfortunately, the long and harsh winter has done a number on some of my plants. One of my hardiest lavender bushes is dead and I had to dig it out.

So, I will certainly need to fill in some empty spaces here and there. Which, of course, is why I am so excited that the Gowanus Nursery is back for the season.

How about you, fellow gardener? Did you lose many plants in your garden during that last big snow storm?

Here is a definite sign that winter is coming soon. I just got an email from the Gowanus Nursery, announcing that they will be closing for the season on Sunday, November 22. But first, the nursery is having a sale on bulbs and books. So make sure to stop by. below is more info:
