If ,like me, you have been hanging on to your old batteries because you can't bear the idea of just throwing them out with your trash, here is some useful information. You can drop off your old rechargeable and cell phone batteries for recycling at the Carroll Gardens Greenmarket, which will be held on Sundays year-round from now on.
Just go to the Green NY information desk set up at the corner of Carroll and Smith Streets and look for the little cardboard box.
Couldn't be easier.
Unfortunately, I still don't know what to do or where to bring my used regular batteries.
Any ideas, dear Reader?

We don't use regular batteries anymore but only rechargeable ones. Those are great for toys, small appliances... (not to be used for fire alarm)

That's what I have been doing as well now, but I am still left with some of the throw-away ones that have run out in flash lights and other small appliances.
Except you are not supposed to throw them away.
So I have collected the over time and would like to dispose of them correctly, but that is easier said than done in NYCity.

A reader just sent me a link to rules on battery disposal.
Rechargable batteries have to be recycled, while Alkaline one-way batteries can be thrown in the trash.

Yes the "new" regular batteries now have no mercury (if they are new "enough", it is actually written on their label) but the old regular batteries have still mercuries, so the recycling is needed. I would recommend the electronic recycling events that take place a few times a year in our nabe (the one associated with PS29 for instance)
