Gearing Up For Spring At The Carroll Gardens Greenmarket

There may still be snow on the ground, but at the Carroll Gardens Greenmarket, there are signs of spring.

Julia Raggio, the market's manager, sent us a few updates for March.:
On Sunday, March 11: After a long winter away, Lani's Farm returns to Carroll Gardens for the season. Stop by for fresh, organic greens and vegetables from Burlington County, New Jersey.

On Sunday, March 18: Beth's Farm Kitchen returns for the spring. Stop by for delicious, locally produced jams, preserves, chutneys, and pickled vegetables from Colombia County, New York.

ALSO Sunday, March 18: Popup Repair returns! Pick up your newly mended goods from last month, and drop off your broken household items to fix from 8am-2pm every third Sunday of the month.

So don't forget to stop by this Sunday to get your fresh produce.

Carroll Gardens Greenmarket Update: Food Scrap & Textile Collection Schedule Changes

I just received some information from the people who organize the Carroll Gardens Greenmarket. It states that: "While Carroll Gardens Greenmarket will be open on Sunday, there will be no food scrap collection or textile collection. Please help us spread the word. Thanks!"

Sunday Before Thanksgiving At Carroll Gardens Greenmarket

With Thanksgiving only days away, local residents took advantage of the Carroll Gardens Greenmarket this past Sunday to stock up on fresh farm produce. Fresh brussels sprouts, squash, beets and celery roots...it all looked amazing. And have you ever seen such huge carrots?  Some of them will end up on my dinner table on Thursday, the rest will go into a carrot cake.

Recycle Your Rechargeable Batteries At Carroll Gardens' Greenmarket

If ,like me, you have been hanging on to your old batteries because you can't bear the idea of just throwing them out with your trash, here is some useful information. You can drop off your old rechargeable and cell phone batteries for recycling at the Carroll Gardens Greenmarket, which will be held on Sundays year-round from now on.

Just go to the Green NY information desk set up at the corner of Carroll and Smith Streets and look for the little cardboard box.

Couldn't be easier.

Unfortunately, I still don't know what to do or where to bring my used regular batteries.

Return Of Greenmarket Makes Carroll Gardeners Very Happy!

Everyone in Carroll Gardens seemed to have been at the first Sunday Greenmarket of the season. No surprise! The weather was just amazing. More importantly, it has been a very, very long winter and the Greenmarket has been on hiatus for more than three months and neighborhood residents were glad to have the market back.

"I am ecstatic" a friend, who was buying organic milk from one of the stalls, told me. "I've been waiting a long time for this."

Yes, indeed! So have I.

It's Back! First Carroll Gardens Greenmarket Of The Season This Sunday

I know you have been waiting as impatiently as me for the Carroll Gardens Greenmarket to come back for another great season of fresh local produce, bread, milk, as well as meat and fish. Most of all, I am looking forward to the annual and perennial plants, since I have a few bare spots in my garden.

The wait is finally over! The market is coming back to the corner of Smith and Carroll Street in front of PS58 for its third season this Sunday. Very cool!

Carroll Gardens Freshmarket Vendors Brave The Cold

Oh, it was so very cold on Sunday morning, dear reader, yet the Freshmarket vendors had set up their produce and were waiting for Carroll Gardeners to arrive to do their shopping. After a busy summer and fall, it was uncharacteristically quiet, though the usual wonderful food was available even this late in the season.
There are still two opportunities to shop, as the last market of the season will be on Sunday, 21st.
After that, we will have to wait months till they come back....So take advantage.

First Carroll Gardens Greenmarket Of The 2008 Season

What a pleasure it was to walk over to the Carroll Gardens Greenmarket on Sunday morning.
Since last year, the market has much expanded and there is now a greater variety of food including dairy, bread, meat as well as seafood. The produce was wonderful. The strawberries were sensational and I regret not having bought a second basket of them. The first was almost gone by the time I returned home.
Of course you know, dear reader, that I am drawn particularly to the flowers and the nursery had some very interesting perennials. I found three which I simply had to have. I am just waiting for cooler weather to find a spot for them in my tiny garden.
As a special treat, local resident Andrew Sarno brought his beautifully restored old Ford-Furguson tractor to the market. He keeps it right here in Brooklyn, parked in a garage.
The only downside to this first Greenmarket of the season was the tremendous heat which already was beastly by 9 AM. I felt sorry for the vendors.
Lets hope it will be cooler by next week.
