Besides fresh produce, plants and recycling, there are always wonderful events planned at the Carroll Gardens Greenmarket, which is held year-round on Sundays from 8 and to 3 pm.
Below is a list of some fun and useful happenings that are coming up in the next few weeks.
Read on:

It’s beginning to looks a lot like Spring (and maybe even Summer) at the Carroll Gardens Greenmarket! The market is in full swing for the 2015 season as all of our farmers have returned with plenty to offer. Besides an explosion of spring greens, lettuces, and asparagus. We’re already seeing some spring fruit make its way to the market too: think strawberries. Last week, we saw lots of radishes, Swiss Chard, and fresh herbs!

Do you have a green thumb? Many of our farms have herb and flower transplants ready for your windowbox or garden!

Returning to Carroll Gardens in June is the Pop-Up Repair! Bring your broken household objects in need of some tender, love, and care. The folks at Pop-Up Repair will fix it within a week. They will be repairing objects the following Sundays (8am-3pm) at Carroll Gardens:
Drop off broken stuff: June 7 and 14
Pick up fixed stuff: June 14 and 21
For more information about the program check out: http://www.popuprepair.com/?page_id=308

For those using EBT/SNAP benefits or WIC/FMNP checks, stop by the Market Info Tent to learn how to use your benefits at the Greenmarket. Not sure if you qualify for EBT/SNAP? Come by the info booth and learn how and where to get screened for eligibility for a variety of programs.

The Carroll Gardens Greenmarket is located on Carroll St between Smith and Court St, Brooklyn . It is open Sundays, Year Round from 8am-3pm.

News From The Carroll Gardens Greenmarket

The Carroll Gardens Greenmarket, which is held every Sunday from 8 am to 3 pm on Carroll Street between Smith and Court Streets, has continued to bring fresh produce to the community throughout the summer and is now gearing up for a great fall season.

Gabriella Stern, the Greenmarket Manager and Outreach Coordinator, sent us some updates about our neighborhood's market. She writes:

"This season, we have an explosion of vegetables and fruit at the Carroll Gardens Greenmarket. The market should be your one-stop-shop for juicy and colorful heirloom tomatoes, fragrant herbs, fresh peppers, summer squash, and of course, fruit! Come shop now and take advantage of the end of the summer produce, because before you know it, we'll be back to eating winter squash.

Not sure what to do with all those tomotoes? In the midst of the hot summer nights, I've been avoiding turning on the stove. Instead, I marinate a few sliced heirloom tomatoes in salt, cumin, and coriander. I then serve them on toasted pita bread with a herbed yogurt sauce and cucumbers. It's an easy, quick and tasty summer dinner or lunch.

New to the market is Nolasco Farm who is selling fresh cut and potted flowers. It's still not too late to start an indoor, windowsill garden! If you're looking to get the most out of your outdoor grill, be sure to pick up some grassfed beef, pork, pasture raised chicken, or wild caught fish from Haywood's Fresh and Seatuck Fish!

The Annual Carroll Gardens Greenmarket Clam Bake will be on Sept 20th! Seatuck Fish will be dishing out samples of a tasty clams with stewed market vegetables. We are asking for a small donation per sample. The event will be held from 10:30am-1pm at the CG Greenmarket."

So make sure to stop by the market and don't forget to bring your compost.

If being green and less wasteful is on your list of resolutions for 2018, I have good news.
The talented folks of Fix-Up (formerly Pop-Up repair) will be collecting household items to be repaired starting January 21st at the Carroll Gardens Greenmarket. As a matter of fact, they will be there every 3rd Sunday of the month, from January all the way to June of this year. So no excuses. Instead of throwing your broken item out, drop it off when you do your market shopping and pick it up the following month.

From the Greenmarket:
Fix-Up at the Carroll Gardens Greenmarket: Every 3rd Sunday, 8am-2pm (next appearance will be Jan 21st)
Bring your broken household items for the fixing--Pop-Up Repair will be at market the third Sunday of every month! Drop off your broken household items at the Pop Up Repair tent and pick it up later, fixed and as good as new. Visit Pop Up Repair's website for more information on their services and a list of items you can bring.

Fix-Up Repair was founded by Sandra Goldmark and Michael Banta to "provide an alternative to the cycle of use and discard." They partner with communities, business and individuals to open short term repair shops around the country. They also host a series of free worships which include book repair and musical instrument repair tutorials.
The pop-up shops are staffed by "theatre artisans and technicians, one of the few remaining professional groups with the skills to repair a wide range of objects."
Pop-Up repair will charge a very reasonable fee for extending the life of your item.

Recipe From Last Sunday's Carroll Gardens Greenmarket Cooking Demonstration

photos courtesy of Lucy Ramirez, Carroll Gardens Greenmarket

I am sorry I missed last Sunday's cooking demonstration at Carroll Gardens Greenmarket. Local resident and chef Myra Klockenbrink of Myra's Mouthful made Moroccan Chicken using ingredients by some of the vendors.
Lucy Ramirez, manager of the neighborhood Greenmarket was kind enough to send along some photos she took during the event.  She writes
"[On Sunday], we did a fun cooking demonstration (Moroccan Chicken) to showcase Yellow Bell Farm's next generation farmer, Katie Bogdanffy. Yellow Bell was formerly named Feather Ridge - located in Elizaville, NY in the Hudson Valley.
Community Chef Myra Klockenbrink wrote the recipe to feature Yellow Bell's "Free Runner" Chickens.
I've attached photos from the day which include Michael Simon, our most faithful volunteer going on 6 years here at the Greenmarket.
The cooking demonstration showcased mainly local ingredients from local family farms: YellowBell Farms, Rogowski Farms, and Jersey Farm Produce.
We plan to do more cooking demonstrations in the coming weeks! Stay tuned to our webpage:
http://www.grownyc.org/greenmarket/brooklyn/carroll-gardens."

I asked Lucy if she could forward Myra's recipe, so that others may try it.  Here it is:

A Carroll Gardens Greenmarket Spring Update

IMG_9597
IMG_3585
The Carroll Gardens Greenmarket will be closed on Sunday, March 27th for Easter.  The compost and textile collection are also cancelled for this Sunday.
However, the Greenmarket is getting ready for spring and Caroline, the market's coordinator, would like to announce some updates.
From Caroline:
The Carroll Gardens Greenmarket was blessed with a relatively mild winter this year! Each Sunday, market manager Dorothy Ferrante has been cooking up warm and tasty cooking demos for our Winter Warrior shoppers. Still, we’re looking forward to signs of spring already popping up: farmers come to market with stories of lambs, calves, and kids being born and fields almost dry enough for the first plantings, while colorful tulips and potted plants brighten their stands. This coming Sunday the market will be closed for the Easter holiday, but we look forward to welcoming back Lani’s Farm the following Sunday, April 3rd. See you at the market!

Sunday, April 3rd 10:30am to 1pm
Opening Day at the Greenmarket
Let’s play ball! Kick off spring and the beginning of baseball season with your favorite farmers. Visit the Market Information tent to sample Haywoods Fresh hot dogs from the grill.

Caroline also sent along the photos below of some naturally colorful eggs that don't need Easter dye to look pretty and of a newborn calf on Haywood’s Fresh’s farm.

"East One Coffee Roasters" To Open Soon In The Former Casa Rosa Space On Court Street

Untitled

The retail space at 384 Court Street at the corner of Carroll Street has sat empty for the past two-and-a-half years, ever since Casa Rosa, an old fashioned Italian eatery, closed its doors after 34 years in Carroll Gardens.
Fortunately, the space will soon be home to a new neighborhood coffee shop and eatery named "East One Coffee Roasters."
A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Morten Tjelum, one of the four partners in this new business.  He was kind enough to provide PMFA with more information about their upcoming business and to include the amazing photo above showing of the current construction work on site.

Morten writes:
After years of vacancy, the space at 384 Court Street (corner of Court and Carroll – previously Casa Rosa) has now found new occupants. Tom (US) of Italian descent and Morten (Danish) who are into the Nordic food craze and Scandinavian simplicity, have rented the space and are now in the process of preparing it for a full service restaurant (along Carroll Street) and an artisan coffee shop (facing Court Street). The team met years ago in London and operated a couple of coffee branded businesses there for a number of years.

The name will be East One Coffee Roasters. E.1 being the post code prefix for the East London neighbourhood of Shoreditch which remains the stomping ground for coffee enthusiasts and independent artisan restaurants. The Shop and Restaurant will be very relaxed and unpretentious. It’ll be a place where locals can pop in for a coffee and a bite to eat, meet neighbours, have a chat, try out one (or some) of the craft beers and wine that will be offered or sit down in the restaurant and enjoy brunch, lunch or dinner.

The restaurant will feature contemporary and eclectic offer of light American fare with a splash of antipodean and British cafe on offer – interesting foods based on seasonal availabilities. We intend to support the local Carroll Gardens Greenmarket and procure as much as possible from there. In acknowledgement of the heritage of Carroll Gardens, it is likely that the menu will offer the occasional red sauce and a couple of pasta dishes (Tom has a number of his Grand Mothers prized recipes). An artisan roaster will be on premise, roasting a number of single origin coffees and espresso blends for the enjoyment of customers throughout the day. Here we will be utilizing the latest technology in an old fashioned art to ensure the happiness of all of our neighbours and passersby that may not enjoy the amazing aroma of freshly roasting coffee on a daily basis (not us of course…we love it!) The Coffee Shop is being rebuild to easily accommodate a number of baby buggies – after all, the space is located across from the playground at Carroll Park. For the many canine members of the neighbourhood, there will certainly always be fresh water available and hook ups strategically placed so that staff and guest can keep an eye on the precious pooches outside.

Morton adds:  “We very much enjoy the neighborhood atmosphere in Carroll Gardens and intend to contribute to the local community in whichever way we can and look forward to be a positive addition to Carroll Gardens.

It will be wonderful to see some life return to this storefront, which has stood vacant for too long. I have no doubt that East One Coffee Roasters will do very well, especially because of its proximity to Carroll Park.
Welcome to Carroll Gardens, Morten and Tom.
