'Stark' Worthy? Check Out Menu Of Soon-To-Open Smith Street Eatery *Diego*

Diego, the new Mexican restaurant that will replace the Union Smith Café at 305 Smith Street was supposedly going to open in time for New Year's, but obviously work on the new eatery has not yet been completed. It's name, however, has been painted on the building's brick wall and the menu has been posted in the window.
But is this the menu that was rumored to have been designed by star chef Ivy Stark?
Back in early December, restaurant owner James Geritano, who also owns Bagels By The Park, told Carroll Gardens Patch that the Executive Chef of Dos Caminos, currently one of New York City's hottest Mexican restaurants, was involved in the new venture.
Eater.com doubted that Stark had such an involvement in the new place, and wrote that her association "has been exaggerated" and that she merely suggested a chef for Diego.

Not sure the menu taped in the window of Diego is "Stark" worthy or not. I guess it doesn't much matter, as long as the food tastes good.
What say you, dear Reader?

$9 for guacamole? Really?

I think they should correct the mispelling of "Diego" in various places on their menu :)

It looks pretty delicious to me! Of course, anything that has the word taco looks delicious to me. But the tacos at Calexico on Union St. are much more reasonably priced and they're AMAZING.

Guacamole's a bit overboard but Ceviche at $10 and Steak tacos at $12 is just standard if they are good enough.

Just a reminder that some of the best tacos in all of NYC are at Oaxaca on Smith St, btwn DeGraw & Douglass. And they're only around $3 a pop. I'm all for Diego in the hood though. I will def check it out.

They have been renovating without a permit. They gut demolished the liquer store also. NO PERMIT. If they read this let them beware that there was a report submitted. This cafe with whatever menu is a filty dirty trash maker. Cans of dirty, half frozen oil seeped into the sidewalk after the blizzard. I saw a guy "cleaning" the fryer with a garden hose. The menu looks lifted from a magazine article. No originals, no Mexico, no heritage.
I'll stick with Mezcals. And Calexico uses food servive grade meats...

This place sounds complete shite. I like to do hood rat stuff with my friends, but I'm never going here. Calexico and Oxaca do decent tacos and burritos. $9 for guac?!!?! $9-$11 for tacos? Here's to Wussification of America!

LOVE "wussification"!! Love it.
Yes, Calexico means well but food service grade meats. And Jetro...

I live on Union St., a half block away, and if this menu is the real deal, I will never set foot inside this place. How could something so insipid and uninspired and expensive open on this corner? Especially after so many other great restaurants have recently opened in the neighborhood.

maybe you all should calm down. if the food is good, they'll be successful. if not, they'll be gone and maybe you can get another italian restaurant - there obviously aren't enough of them in the area.

I'm from CA and know the taco deficit in NY. Sunset park
comes close and those places on 10th ave in Manhattan.
This corner could be so good with a great owner with
taste, not real estate. Look, most who will eat here will just want to sit outside regardless of the menu. And most who will eat here are nit from Brooklyn.

Looks pricier than the other spots.. But I would rather pay for quality then eat some low grade dog poo that we normally get. Plus Im sure this neighborhood needs an upscale mexican place.. why? bc we can afford it and we deserve it and its obviously something we don't have.. for cheap ppl dont go by so I can get a table easier..

Mezcals? horrible.. Calexico? they cant get an order right to save their lives...Im going to try it and Im sure everyone else in carroll gardens will as well. like the last comment said if you don't like it stay away so the wait isnt as long..

You may be right. Frankly, I was unaware of the fact that there was a Diego in Red Hook.

For better Mexican food, these prices are actually quite reasonable. And look at how many options there are for fish or shrimp dishes! Be a playa not a hata! (Mexican beach pun intended.)

I just called and the guy on the phone said they're opening on February 5th. The wait continues....

Good to know. Thanks!

Diego is now open. We ate there last night and the food was very delicious. The guacamole is prepared right at your table and the waiter asks you how much of each ingredient to put in. Very unique and fun. The choc cake was out of this world with the center nice and runny. Diego is def a must to try and go back again and again.

I think "sandra" is a shill.
I saw the non Mexican owners quibbling over the old Cafe sign while piles of fake mexican stuff was being delivered. How can they OPEN with piles and piles of trash piled on the side? Two busted tree pots in front and a covered barbeque? FYI AGAINST THE LAW to burn/ grill use fire in front yards. If they try and use it I will report them. I loive a fw houses away from this dirty filthy place. I smell the greasy smelly trash in Summer and have to walk by stranhgers eating on a dirty corner with trash cans piled high. I will never go here.
