If You Are Going To Ride One Of Those Big Dutch Bikes In Carroll Gardens....

...perhaps you would not mind parking it just a bit off to the side and not in the middle of the sidewalk.  There is a perfectly good bicycle stand right by the curb.  See it?
And perhaps, it may be better to not leave your child unattended sitting in the cargo box, even if it is just for a second.

In front of Canteen on Smith Street a few afternoons ago.

And ride in the right direction in the bike lane!!

Not really in the way...plenty of room to get by.

It's clear that not much effort was made to not be in the way and that's the point. It's that type of inconsideration that leads to people stopping in doorways when exiting buildings to light up a cigarette or stopping right at the end of an escalator to look around. NY is infested with it and I applaud Katia for calling this person out.

If you are going to ride one of those big Dutch bikes in Carroll Gardens...please kill yourself.

it's the same as stopping suddenly and turning around on a busy sidewalk, and then getting upset when someone runs into you

Agree with anonymous at 3:08. I am encountering this type of inconsideration in the neighborhood all too frequently lately.

There is no room to get by if you are pulling a shopping cart. It is rude and selfish.

The place that sells those is also obnoxious. They take up the entire sidewalk with their bikes and even use up a bike stand on Court simply to display their bikes.

Those things are so ugly and ungainly and expensive I don't know who would buy them anyway.

@12:41 or eve use the bike lane! Why are so many cyclists using the sidewalk these days? I understand that they are afraid of cars and I don't blame them, but pedestrians are afraid of you!

But where do I leave my kid when I want to get a coffee and catch up with my friends? The bar isn't open yet.

Obnoxious! (leaving your bike smack in the middle of the sidewalk, I mean. Leaving your kid in the seat doesn't bother me; we've gotten into the unfortunate habit of treating children with kid gloves at the expense of common sense. Pediatric ER visits have increased, despite rubberized playgrounds, peanut-free zip codes, etc. and for a variety of different reasons, one of which is certainly the failure of many parents to tear themselves away from their iPhones and iPads long enough to prevent their child from swallowing a handful of artisanal screws. Perhaps some people are just not brought up to be conscientious about the needs of those around them?). Oblivion is so unpleasant to be around.

first, while I am not the man in this post i do own one of these bikes so let’s start with full disclosure. second, to the person who commented on the 13th at 325p, how you could ever type those words especially in the context of this conversation is appalling, you sound like a 13 year old bully who doesn’t know any better and you should be ashamed of yourself.
in regards to the post, yes, he should have parked it closer to the curb and should be more respectful of others in general, beyond that point, let’s not judge and i am sure that a blog that can be as informative as this one has better things to write about. this bike has proved to be an excellent alternative to a car for my family and unless we are breaking the law then do not judge those who chose to ride them and stop judging the owners of a perfectly fine store that is only advocating one of the cleanest forms of transportation out there.
i read this blog every day, i have a lot of respect for Katia and the issues that she sheds light on but if you are going to start putting up posts like this then please start posting pictures of everyone on court and smith who double parks and lets their car idle. i will keep riding my dutch bike and give everyone who had a negitive comment here a big thumbs up if you ever had the guts to heckle me as i peddle by.

What I find appaling is that the child was left unattended in a "vehicle"! Although I cannnot imagine someone making a stealthy getaway in one of those contraptions, it is possible. Had that been a car I believe that would constitute abuse.
This aspect of the story seems to fall to the wayside in the comments section. A stunning illustration of the air of entitlement and narcissism which pervade this neighborhood.
BTW, don't leave your little dogs tied up while you "run in for a second"! There are bands of thugs on the look out for such an opportunity. Those innocents are then used as bait for dog fighting enterprises.

Let's just clear on thing up: riding bicycles on the the sidewalk is illegal in NYC.

Sec. 4-07(c)(3)(i): No person shall ride or operate a bicycle upon any sidewalk area unless permitted by
sign.

"I am encountering this type of inconsideration in the neighborhood all too frequently lately"...let's think about the people who've taken over our neighborhood lately...people with young children...the most inconsiderate, oblivious people on the planet.

I gotta second Anonymous, December 14, 2012 10:15 AM. As much as I consider this blog an invaluable resource for community news, I find these candid public shaming photos far more reprehensible than the regrettable subject of the photographs.

Bikes are better than cars, so anything bicycle stores and bicyclists do is acceptable and even noble.

I'd love to hear a bicyclist admit a mistake - just once. All they ever do is protect the hive and point fingers.

This is a picture perfect illustration of the overly indulgent - lacking awareness or concern for anyone other than themselves or their children -parent that abounds in Brooklyn these days. I was born and raised in CG but have lived in Manhattan for the last 20 years. I've recently began working in CG and, whether in the neigborhood for work or visiting family, I encounter this mentality on an almost daily basis. From the mothers in Park Slope that were up in arms over resistance to their toddlers crawling around in a bar while they were sipping afternoon cocktails (and please, dont get me started on the young children in Abilene trick or treating on halloween - yeah, they do serve food but lets be real folks, at 9pm especially on a weekday, its a bar..) to the parents who think it is effective parenting is negotiating with their child, today's Brooklyn parent seems destined to raise a generation of self aborbed douches.

Too many bikers riding on sidewalks and riding the wrong way on one-way streets, too. I am Dutch. Bike riders have to follow the rules like everyone else. People in Holland follow biking rules better, that's why biking works there.

This blog has ceased being useful to the community. The comments section of this blog is nothing more than a trans-generational hate-fest. As Katia approves all comments, I can only assume she agrees with some of them. It was fun while it lasted.

It's embarrassing that this is blog-worthy for our neighborhood. There's so much to be positive about in Carroll Gardens, it's really a waste to fret about something so inconsequential.

This man's behavior is definitely not exemplary in this photo but it is just incredibly sad to see how one picture can stir such hatred towards a person, even going so far as to say, "Please kill yourself." He is not the typical "overly indulgent" resident as described in these posts. He does not even live in the neighborhood. I know this man and he is an incredible father, special education teacher, and all around stellar person..

I don't like the public shaming aspect of this post, totally unnecessary. Personally, I have just as big of an issue with all the people double parking in front of Citibank and Happy Pants Cafe.. But they're "locals", so I guess that's ok.
