The Court Street Festival has been a yearly event in Carroll Gardens for quite a few decades now. And as in years past, there were the obligatory Italian sausage and zeppole stands, bouncy castles, cotton candy, fish bowl toss and clothing stands.
Years ago, the festival was more reflective of the neighborhood's Italian community. More recently, it has morphed into your run-of-the-mill street fair. As one commenter posted after visiting yesterday: "Whole lotta junk being sold there. Felt more like the Canal street fair than Court Street. Guess the local stores don't want to be a part of this? Has it always been like this? The gray and chilly weather didn't help I'm sure."
I tend to agree that it could be so much better if some of our local restaurants and businesses were to participate.
In answer to the question "Was it always like this?", I have posted some photos of the Court Street Festival back in the '80s. As I mentioned above, the event used to have a distinct Italian flair.
I have posted some photos of the Court Street Festival back in the '80s. They were taken by Celia Cacace, who sadly moved away recently after a lifetime in Carroll Gardens. Celia helped organize the event for many years.
Recognize anyone?
