Once the go-to-place if you wanted to get a roll of film developed or your passport photo taken in Carroll Gardens, Royal 1-Hour Photo at 289 Court Street is closing its doors.
In the past few days, Mr. Kim, the owner has been selling off his inventory, including all his machines, at 50% off.
In this digital age, it was just a matter of time before this closure, of course. There were once quite a few of these photo stores all along Court Street. Then chain drug stores like CVS and Rite Aid moved in and offered the same service, and the smaller photo shops began to close.
Mr. Kim has been part of the community for quite a number of years, and the closing of his store is a reminder that times are changing quickly in Carroll Gardens.

There are some people like my kid who enjoy shooting with film and lack access to a darkroom. Royal was also my go to place for passport photos and other things.
Jin (Jimmy) was my go-to guy for photos, passports and even CD copies, picture frames and chats with him about the choir he sings in. We will really miss him!
Oh no. I'm sad about this. But it was a matter of time.
I used them often. Well, the neighborhood will need another nail salon. :(
@2;21AM=
either a nail salon or Kids store!
Jimmy has made many family photo Christmas cards for us over the years. Before digital cameras, we were in his shop almost daily for work photo's; Jimmy was always there to help with deadlines; vut we all saw how digital photography changed this.
And my kids are now into film photography and have been going back to Royal for their prints. They see that there is something more special about an image captured on a negative.
Wishing Jimmy the best, and thanks for his part in making this place more of a neighborhood.
It has to be an organic store.....
