A Cook's Companion Says Good-Bye After 20 Years On Atlantic Avenue

Some store closings in the community are sadder than others. The notice that Cook's Companion at 197 Atlantic Avenue will be leaving after twenty years in business hurst a LOT.
A Cook's Companion stocked kitchen tools 'for Brooklyn chefs', sharpened knives, sold Soda Stream refills, beautiful candles, sold cook books and so much more.  It was one of the only, if not the only such store in the vicinity and it will be missed tremendously.
A notice in the window reads that the final day is anticipated for mid-February. "We are proud to have contributed to the vibrance and growth of the neighborhood and we are now ready for another challenge.  It has been our pleasure to be part of your lives and this community," the sign says.

We wish Jennifer, Evelyn, Erica, Jen, Conrad, Sara, Leslie and Paul well.  The Cook's Companion will be greatly missed by many.

Bully present...

This one really hurts. I'd always stop by when I was back in the old hood. Did they give any reason whey they're closing up shop?

None except for saying that it was time to move on.

I used to work here, and it's a wonderful place. Jennifer was a terrific employer, and her store is beautiful, with a thoughtful inventory and inviting layout. I've visited many times since moving on, and I'm so sad they're leaving the neighborhood. The staff was so knowledgeable and warm--I could go in with the vaguest idea of what I needed, and they'd help me land on the exact thing. A real loss to Atlantic Ave.

Where will we get ourChristmas Poppers? I certainly am going to be at a loss when it comes to Christmas gift time--but this is one person who will not be turning to Amazon as an alternative source.

they were a wonderful anchor of the neighborhood. Knowledgeable, kind, and dog-friendly.
This one really hurts.

that's really disappointing. i wonder how badly they've been impacted by a changing demographic that prefers to buy their kitchenware on amazon.

i'm a fan of the store and i'm there three times a year - perhaps - and what i love most is being able to browse, explore, pick items up and ask questions - that's something you can't do via online vendors.

wonder what will become of them.

I shopped at this store all the time when I lived in Brooklyn, and remember their original location further down on Atlantic, towards Henry Street. Sad news, indeed.

Wow...this is really sad. There's no other store like this here. I wish someone would have bought the business and maintain it as lovingly as the current owner.

this is a very sad one. I spoke to one of the long-term employees who told me that business has been good and the landlord very agreeable but jennifer felt it was time to move on. it's too bad she didn't try to sell the business (that i know of) it will be missed.

When I got married, I had people put money on account for me there instead of registering for specific gifts. 12 years out, I STILL have a lot of the stuff I got there. Another local shop bites the dust.

Oh no! Jennifer was an amazing person and her staff was great. I remember fondly the wine tastings Cooks Companion and Heights Chateau used to put on. We'd go as much for the neighborhood gossip as the wine (and food from Sahadi's - what a combo!). It's a little out of the way for us, but we are still in there several times a year. She's been doing well for years and has a loyal customer base, so I imagine she's just wanting to do something different.

This news is such a bummer. It was such a welcome addition to the neighborhood when it opened and always a go to for cooking gear. I was in there before Christmas and said to friends at the time that I thought they were going to announce their closing soon. The selection was quite sparse and the shelves seemed full of unsold back stock. Still, it's too bad and I, too, wonder why they didn't decide to sell the business. Tarzian in Park Slope is a good, locally owned alternative. As for where to buy Christmas crackers, Sterling Place (Atlantic Ave and 7th Ave) always carries them.

I traveled here often from Prospect Heights and loved that the staff could always answer real cooking questions like what tool to use for which technique. A very sad loss.

You can get Christmas Poppers at The Chip Shop, a block or so away.

What a shame. When ever I went in for something they always had what I needed. Always helpful and a great place to shop.

Sodastream refills are available at Bed Bath Beyond and you can use their never expiring 20% off coupons.

Crap, what a loss for the neighborhood. That store was great. I watched the wonder chase down a shoplifter who had stolen Peugot salt & pepper grinders. Courageous lady.

Now the neighborhood will have to take the subway to get new Soda Stream refills? Will a lot of people will revert to making landfill?

Perhaps if everyone calls Mazzone Hardware and asks them to carry refills, we can get them to try it?

Who else might we ask to carry it? Smith & Vine (718) 243-2864?

Great idea.

Duman Home might be a good candidate, and it's pretty central. (718) 576-3331

I used to wok a couple of blocks away and I loved this store! In fact, my favorite spatula was a promotional one from eons ago. I was thinking it needed replacement... Can't make it downtown by this weekend, but still have lovely memories of the shop and the staff there.

Every cooking and pastry item I ever needed was always there. They were the best. I miss them dearly. Farewell friends.
