Gowanus Needs You! Advocate For Historic Neighborhood Buildings At Landmarks Preservation Commission's Public Hearing Tommorrow

oo
Dear Readers, Gowanus needs your help to preserve a bit of its history before Councilman Brad Lander's dream of a massive rezoning becomes a reality and changes this unique neighborhood forever.

The NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission will be holding a public hearing tomorrow, Tuesday, September 24, 2019 to discuss five historic Gowanus buildings which are being considered for designation as individual city landmarks.
The five buildings are:
-the Gowanus Canal Flushing Tunnel Pump House and Gate House (2 buildings) at 196 Butler Street
-the Brooklyn Rapid Transit (BRT) Central Powerhouse at 153 2nd Street
-the Old American Can Factory (3 buildings) at 238-246 3rd Street
-the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) Building at 223-237 Butler Street
-and the Norge Sailmakers Corporation Building at 170-172 2nd Avenue.

The Gowanus Landmarking Coalition invites you to "show up, sign up, and testify in favor of landmark designation for all five buildings."

From the Coalition:
"As long as you mention at least one of the five buildings on the docket (see list in first link above), you are free to speak about other historic Gowanus properties not on the list that you believe should be designated too. Perhaps you'll mention the T.H. Roulston Building, the R.G. Dun & Company Building, the Union Street Bridge Operating Tower, and the Pacific Branch Library - which also stand to be affected by the proposed Gowanus rezoning). "

If you are not able to attend, please submit your testimony in support of the designations here via the Landmarks Preservation Commission's online form.
