"Is it not cruel to let our city die by degrees, stripped of all her proud monuments, until there will be nothing left of all her history and beauty to inspire our children? If they are not inspired by the past of our city, where will they find the strength to fight for her future?" Jacqueline Kennedy

Many of our small local businesses are valiantly trying to stay open to serve the Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill and Cobble Hill communities during the Coronavirus pandemic. However, the longer we are being asked to stay indoors and to keep our distance from people, the harder it has become for our merchants to stay afloat.
Some, which offer vital services, have adapted to this new reality by offering more deliveries or take out services.  Others have adjusted their hours or even the number of days they are open.

However, we have heard from the majority of owners that things are really bad and that they may not survive without the community's help.
We can all help by shopping in our local stores instead of going to the chain stores, which have  deeper pockets and can weather this pandemic much better. Most of our delis and bodegas are pretty well stocked and may actually have items that the bigger stores are out of, all at pretty regular prices.

So, shop the small stores and help insure that they will continue to be part of our neighborhood once this is all over.
And please stay health, everyone.

Below are some of the changes to opening hours for some businesses.
Stinky Bklyn on Smith Street is now closed. (Smith and Vine remains open.)

Travel Bar on Court Street is open, selling to-go batched cocktails, bottles of wine and whiskey flights (they have over 450 whiskies to choose from) Details at www.travelbarbrooklyn.com.
Caputo's Fine Foods has cut back their hours. They are no longer open on Wednesdays. They now only open their doors From Thursdays to Saturday 9:00 am - 5:00 pm and Sundays 9:00 am - 2:30 am

Scotto's Wines on Court is closed on Sundays now.

Cheeeeeeeeese and Beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer has closed on Court Street at the corner of Second Place.

Seeds of Love, the wonderful little café place on Smith is now opening a bit later in the morning and offering great lunch options.

Our friend and reader Christian, who has been such a big help reported that our laundromats are starting to close one by one. He writes:
"Ms. Lee's laundromat that's on Henry and Sackett is closing for the long-term.
The laundromat on Henry and President Streets is cutting back its hours."

Indeed, the laundromat on Smith Street between First Place and Carroll Street was closed this past Sunday as well.

Where are the younger residents when we need them. Working from home and not caring about their local stores. They only know how to shop online. They have a problem interacting in person face to face. It is now up to the "left overs" as they call us to save what is left of our small town; Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill. But we cannot do it by ourselves, we need their help. Get out there!!

Actually 4:21, getting out there is not 100% safe right now.

I have never heard a single person call long time residents "leftovers" outside of bitter people in the comments section on this blog who claim that they're being called leftovers.

Gourmet fresh has been great. You can order in advance and they'll have it all packed up for you so you don't have to go in the store if you don't want to.

My family is trying to support our community while also figuring out our own uncertainty (possible layoffs, salary cuts, etc.). Thank you for keeping us updated so we can continue to support local stores in the ways we can, while staying safe inside/limited contact.

Anyone know of a laundromat that's open for pick up and delivery? We've used Super Laundromat on Smith (next to Giardini's Pizza) for 20 years now. Their sign says that they'll do pick up and delivery but the number is disconnected. Things will start to get stinky soon!

Super Laundromat is now closed. I went to Bubble Laundromat on Nelson and Court today instead. They are not doing drop offs, only self-service.

@ 4:21 - a few things: do you know for a fact that the younger residents are not supporting local businesses?? Would love to see the numbers on that. Not all of us are working from home. Some of us have been laid off, which means we cannot spend as we would have previously. We need to budget to ensure that we can still pay thing like rent. So yes, spending needs to be cut back a bit. And it's not that we have a problem with interacting face to face, it's that we're actually not even supposed to be leaving our apartments right now (especially if you don't have gloves and masks). Trust me, I would much rather be out and about in the neighborhood, but again, it's NOT SAFE.
So before you start blaming us for things, please remember that we do care about this neighborhood, and we're all doing the best we can, while still trying to be safe.

I didn't see a picture of Gersi in the photos. Just want to remind everyone they are open Thursday to Sunday. They're a great local restaurant, friendly with great food (IMO). You can get delivery from grub hub or call them direct to pick-up. If you haven't been sacked from your job please keep them in mind for dinner. I don't work for them, I'm their neighbor.

and let's not forget Nerd Be Cool (right next to Travel Bar). they're still serving coffee and espresso drinks - and matcha lattés for those who need their matcha latté fix (an abomination to decency but these days we must all be more forgiving).
