Former India House On Court Street To Become "Pronto Pizza"

The retail space at 139 Court Street, across the street from Trader Joe's, has been empty for about a year now. Formerly occupied by India House, a fixture on Court Street for decades, the 750 sf storefront was for lease for $7,000 by Smith Hanten Real Estate back in July 2009. After a few month, the price was lowered to $6,500. The original ad from Smith Hanten (see above) stated that food and liquor would not be permitted.
I guess the landlord changed his mind about the food part, because a new banner announces the opening of "Pronto Pizza."
With My Little Pizza just a block away at 114 Court Street, do you think, dear Reader, that the location across the street from Trader Joe's will offset the high rent?

Brooklyn At Work: Scrap Removal

I am not sure exactly what was being removed from an office building by this crew on Court Street. Air conditioner parts, perhaps?
No matter. The five men were working hard to hoist the piece onto the truck, while a sixth was looking on.

Number 217 Court Street A Sad Sight

217 Court Street

Back of 217 obviously gone

Cracks in the front façade

Its neighbor at 219 Court Street

Also has been vacated

I was so busy last week that I did not get a chance to take my usual walk down to Brooklyn Heights via Court Street. So when I heard that number 217 Court Street partially collapsed as a result of days and days of rain, I did not get a chance to take photos.

On Sunday, I finally made it down there and took these. The back of the building is all but gone, judging by the view of blue sky and trees through one of the front windows. There are also some rather nasty cracks in the front façade, though they may have been there already.

The building was certainly not one of the nicest in our brownstone neighborhood, but I shudder to think what will be built in its place once it is torn down. That side of Court Street in Boerum Hill is not landmarked or down-zoned.

Number 219 , a much cuter brick building has a 'Vacate" sign on its door. I sure hope that structure has not suffered too much structural damage. That would be a real pity.

Picture Of The Day: Street Corner Tableau

Something struck me as very funny
about this Court Street tableau.

"No Standing Anytime,"
a pile of garbage
a parking meter
a newspaper dispenser
and...
a green balloon.

A Moment In Time: "Communicating" On Court Street

They were standing

Two women
Two strollers
Two cell phones.

Talking, talking, talking,
not to each other,
not to the children.

Space Occupied By Indi(a) House For Rent, But Restaurant Owner Not Worried

Smith Hanten real estate listing

I was a bit confused when I passed Smith Hanten's real estate office on Smith Street. There,
in the window, was a listing for 139 Court Street, the storefront currently occupied by India House ( the letter A fell off long ago.) In red lettering, the advertisement read: Available now. $ 7,000.
How could that be? I wasn't aware of the place having closed, so I made sure to check it out on my way down Court.

Sure enough, the restaurant was still there, though a 'for rent' sign was screwed to its façade.
I popped my head in to speak to the manager and asked if the place was closing. He seemed surprised. I explained that I had seen the place advertised in a real estate office.

" Ah," he looked bemused " the owner of the building has tried to rent it out for a long time. I don't have a lease anymore. He wants too much money."

I told him that in today's market, the landlord may have a tough time finding a new tenant. I suggested that maybe, for now, the restaurant was safe.

" I know" he said, " I am not worried. It's too much money."

We'll see. India House has been at that location for a very, very long time.
