For all those in the neighborhood who have a sweet tooth, Mia's Bakery at 139 Smith Street, which open its doors a few weeks ago, is full of wonderful temptations.  From croissants to muffins, from cupcakes to pies, from cakes to gelato, everyone will find the perfect delectable treat here.
Everything is baked on premise and one can peek through a window directly into the kitchen to watch the bakers prepare the pastries. While I was there, chocolate ganache was being piped onto a layer cake, which looked amazing.
Mia's has a full coffee bar.  They use beans from Brooklyn Roasting Company.  Of course, you can grab a cup and a pastry to go, but the bakery has a nice seating area and a cute little outdoor patio in the back. For all those who need to stay connected or are looking for a place to work, there is free WiFi.
Talk to the manager if you would like Mia's to host your special occasions or kids' birthday parties.

So next time you walk down Smith Street, stop by and treat yourself.  It's open from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm.

Another closing on Smith Street.
This past saturday evening, I was going to join some neighborhood friends for dinner at Coco Roco, the Peruvian restaurant at 139 Smith Street. When I arrived, my friends were standing outside the place and pointed to a a sign in the window indicating that the eatery had closed.   For good.  Brown paper has already been taped to the windows.
Yesterday, as I walked by, it seemed as though some construction was underway. I asked someone who was stepping into the place if the restaurant was definitely closed and he confirmed.

Coco Roco has been a fixture for a number of years. It started at this location as Cholita back in 2005.
In recent years, customer reviews on Yelp have been rather critical.
No mention of the closure appears on Coco Roco's web site. The establishment has a sister location on Fifth Avenue in Park Slope, unless that has closed as well. Does anyone know?  Will you miss Coco Roco on Smith Street?

Smith Street Expands Its Menu With Free Salsa Lessons

How about some Salsa with your ceviche? Salsa dancing, that is. Every Thursday, Coco Loco at 139 Smith Street, is offering free lessons. I guess in a recession, restaurants have to expand their repertoire to attract more customers.
