Clarett Looking For Retail Tenant For 340 Court Street

Sharing the fate of many other Brooklyn real estate projects during this economic downturn, the Clarett development site at 340 Court Street has seen no activity since November 2008. It appeared that Carroll Gardeners would have to live with an ugly blue construction fence and a giant hole in the ground right in the center of their neighborhood for a long time.

So it was a bit surprising to many when a "Retail Space For Lease" signs went up at the site last week. Has Clarett gotten further financing? Does this mean that Clarett is rethinking the project? Are they considering a one-story retail "tax payer" building until they are able to add more stories? Or is getting financing contingent on finding a retail tenant?

Getting these questions answered by the development company seems to be a bit of a challenge. Clarett has stopped talking to the community long ago. And judging by the email responses from aides of our elected officials, Clarett has been equally unresponsive to their inquiries.

Clarett Restores Sidewalk In Front Of "Collection On Court'

Just last week, I reported that Clarett was pausing construction at their "Collection On Court" at 340 Court Street for a few months. As I mentioned before, Carroll Gardeners weren't very enthusiastic about the large Rogers Marvel designed building, but they sure hadn't signed up for a huge hole in the ground in the middle of the neighborhood either.
If indeed, construction is going to be discontinued for a while, it is important that Clarett maintains the site. Responding to a request from the neighborhood and from elected officials, the developer moved the blue construction fence back to the property line yesterday, restoring the sidewalk for pedestrians. That's good news.
Lets hope they will continue to be responsive and responsible for their property. After all, they came, demolished, dug and....left us with this giant pit.

A MUST MISS: GCCDC's Lovefest

Now here is an event that I am sure to miss! The Gowanus Canal Community Development Corporation (GCCDC)
is throwing itself a 30th Anniversary Gala Dinner Dance on October 16th at 'Giando On The Water'. And guess who they are honoring? Rogers Marvel...the architectural firm that is designing the Public Place site here in Carroll Gardens. They are also the firm that designed Clarett's "The Collection" ( a.k.a. The Mausoleum) at 340 Court Street.
GCCDC is bestowing their 'Corporate Service Award' on Rogers Marvel.
It all seems a bit incestuous to me, if you ask me.
