Our local parks in Carroll Gardens and Cobble Hill are filled to capacity these days, especially with little kids. That does not leave a lot of space for teens and young adults, who certainly should have a place of their own. Imagine how cool it would be to provide them with a skate park right in our own community. The Friends Of Douglass/Greene Park want to make the skate park a reality and will be holding a fundraiser. below is the info.

SKATE PARK FUND RAISER

The Friends of Douglass/Greene Park are inviting you to be a part
renovation of a park for all of our neighborhoods!

This fund raiser is to be held at “Building on Bond”,
at the corner of
Bond & Pacific Streets
on Monday, October 19th,
7:00 – 9:00pm.

The suggested
donation is only ten bucks – includes food & drink & music & surprise raffle & silent auction items with great stuff from local shops, restaurants and artists.
This is for the future home of a skate park, playground and picnic area in
Thomas Greene Park located next to the DD Pool between Nevins St. & 3rd Ave. & Douglass & DeGraw Streets.
We want to get our park started right now. This can be done by the
purchase of ‘skate elements’ which cost $3,000 each. The Brooklyn Parks
Dept. has assured us that if we purchase these now - they can be used in the current park and in the renovated park once it is developed.

Sponsored by the Friends – _www.friendsofdouglassgreenepark.org_

I stopped going to Thomas Greene Park Pool after I found out that this was the site of a gassification plant and highly toxic coal tar that is migrating. This summer, there was someone drilling on Nevins Street to test the groundwater to see how the coal tar is migrating. Hate to bring this bad news, because a skate park sure sounds nice. I know that there is a big attempt to gentrify that park, too.

We have learned that most parks in NYC were built on brownfield sites, as the layers of concrete and blacktop were considered adequate for safety.
There are 17 separate brownfield sites in and along the Gowanus; 3 are already being remediated.
The FoD/GP are raising money to update an underutilized park. The folks who already use it for handball, bball, volley ball, skateboarding, family parties, etc. will not be gentrified out of the updated park. Maria

I sometimes walk past that park, on Nevins St., and have been struck by a strong stench. I don't know what it is - I was told that it may have something to do with the Gowanus Canal. I had no idea this was a brownfield site. Which 3 sites are already being remediated? This isn't one of them, right? Just the concrete and blacktop. Most parks in NYC built on brownfield sites makes me wonder why we would want our children playing there.

I think Love Canal was cemented over, too - and people got sick. We need a health study in Gowanus and environs!
