San Francisco-Based 'Marine Layer' Opens Its (Very Blue) Store In Cobble Hill

San Francisco-based retailer Marine Layer, maker of casual men’s and women’s clothing, has just opened the doors of its Cobble Hill store at 195 Court Street. It is the brand's second New York City store. (The first one is located on Bleeker Street in Manhattan.)

True to its name, marine blue seems to be the brand's trademark color.  Matching the clothing in the store, blue subway tiles have been attached to its façade, and the entire building has been painted to match.

The prices for the clothing are predictably high, but as the retailer's web site notes,  Marine Layer thinks "it’s better to pay a little more for a shirt that you really like."
Hm, as long as you have the money and don't max out your credit card, I say.

Until recently, the storefront was home to Goldy + Mac, a small trendy women's clothing and
accessoires boutique. Before that, it housed Bococa Café.

Goldy + Mac Boutique Closes Its Cobble Hill Location

Yet another closing in the neighborhood.   Goldy + Mac, a small trendy women's clothing and
accessories boutique, recently vacated the storefront at 195 Court Street, which it had occupied since 2012.
Goldy + Mac's owners, Ashley Gold and Susan McInerney, operate two sister boutiques in Park Slope, one in Manhattan and one in Greenport.

Prior to Goldy + Mac, this retail space was the home of Bococa Café.  Does anyone remember it?

Reader 'Trumbully' pointed to an article in Crain's which states that the storefront at 195 Court Street has already been rented to Marine Layer, a national retailer based on the West Coast
From Crain's:
San Francisco-based Marine Layer, which makes men’s and women’s duds, joins other national outfits, most notably J.Crew and Rag and Bone, that have signed leases along the Cobble Hill stretch. It has inked a five-year lease for 1,600 square feet on the ground and lower floors at 195 Court St., between Wyckoff and Bergen streets. Currently, the retailer has only one New York City location, in Manhattan’s West Village. Marine Layer hopes to open in Brooklyn this spring.

“This is another example of a quality retail tenant choosing Court Street for their first Brooklyn location,” said George Danut of CPEX Real Estate, who represented the landlord, the Lily Jalinos Living Trust, along with colleague Ryan Condren. “J.Crew opened the gates to a new pool of tenants on Court Street.”

Goldy + Mac: Another Trendy Clothing Boutique For Court Street

Late last week, Goldy + Mac opened its doors at 195 Court Street, joining the ever growing number of small trendy women's clothing boutique in the neighborhood.

Goldy + Mac's owners, Ashley Gold and Susan McInerney, already operate a boutiques on 7th Avenue and one on 5th Avenue in Park Slope, as well as a sister store in Greenport.
For the moment, the Court Street store carries a small selection of clothing by such companies as BCBG and Suzi Chin, but more pieces will be added soon. The boutique also features a small but fun selection of handbags, jewelry, scarves and other accessories.

Prior to Goldy + Mac, this retail space was the home of Bococa Café.

Bococa's Café on Court Street Bids Farewell

"Bococa's lease has finished" reads the simple announcement on the door of this small café at 195 Court Street.  Its doors had been closed for the last few weeks, but the handwritten note only appeared a couple of days ago. The large "Store For Lease" sign from Cpex, on the other hand, has hung above the storefront for a while now.

As I peeked into the place, a man sitting on the bench in front of the defunct café said: "The landlord wouldn't renew the lease."

Cpex's listing for the retail space reads: Opportunity to expand commercial space up to 1,500SF or a 1,200SF backyard for outdoor seating.
The Triple Net Lease is $5,900 per month. 
Bococa, according to another sign in the window, had been operating in this space since 2005. Before that time, it was 'Mazzola Bakery and Café', which was affiliated with the bakery at 192 Union Street, at the corner of Henry Street in Carroll Gardens. Read more
