Court Tree Collective, the small gallery/event space at 371 Court Street, will be exhibiting the works of local artist Linda Marchisotto. The solo exhibit will be featuring the artist's collages and diptychs, some of which are pictured above.
A free opening reception will be held at the gallery on March 28 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. The exhibit will be on view till April 25th, 2015.

My work reflects my eclectic interests, studies and pursuits over many years: dreamwork, Jung, depth psychology, mythology, art history, alchemy, astrology,symbols, the power of image, the Tarot, shamanism, archetypes, language, the Ancient Mysteries, the Ancient world, Taoism, the I Ching, the Divine Feminine, ways of seeing, divination, Celtic spirituality and the land, quantum physics, poetry, and a lifelong obsession with and reverence for books.

My collage process is a seemingly random selection of images that is not random at all, but rather guided somehow. Working with a dream or an idea, the selection of the first image is serendipitous. As I sift through many layers of fragmented images on the table before me, one will speak to me and become the catalyst for what comes next and for how it will all unfold.

The selection of the subsequent images arises from the unconscious as I find and create associations between images. The images are mostly fragments of images abstracted from their original context. Meaning comes to light through the juxtaposition of these fragments, which allows for the unfolding of metaphor, symbol and meaning. A narrative arises which can be read as well as felt on many levels. Not every viewer will have the same experience, however, as the images and symbols will mean different things to different people. Mystery is that which cannot be known. It can be felt, but not necessarily put into words and so the experience of the viewer becomes intuitive.

The collages from the Book of Dreams are diptychs in dialogue with each other as are the boxes. Both of these formats invite intimacy and contemplation as well as entry into sacred time and space. The boxes reference devotional Books of Hours or small altarpieces yet have nothing to do with the religious and everything to do with the universal and archetypal.

In the past, Chef Kar Yee, a member of Court Street Collective, has transformed the small gallery at 371 Court Street into a wonderful Hong Kong-style noodle shop to recreate the smells, tastes and memories of her childhood.
On February 24th, she will be cooking a 5-course Chinese meal in celebration of Chinese New Year.
The cost is $40 and includes a beverage.

January 2015 Cooking Events At Court Tree Collective On Court Street

Court Tree Collective, the small gallery/event space at 371 Court Street between Carroll Street and First Place, has been hosting quite a few interesting events since they opened their door late last year. Besides exhibits featuring local artists like Orazio and filmmaker Mark Street, the gallery has hosted food and cooking events curated by chefs.

Just last months, the Collective was transformed into a wonderful Hong Kong-style noodle shop by chef Kar Yee to recreate the smells, tastes and memories of her childhood.

The event was so popular that  Kar Yee will bring the noodle shop back in late January.

Court Tree will also host a Cheese Tasting and a Meatball Making class at the beginning of the year.

I call myself a cook, cheesemonger, goodtimes maker. I love nothing more than facilitating fun, memorable experiences around food. I first started cooking in high school when I became vegan (go figure) and needed to learn, well, for survival. I realized that I had a passion for studying cookbooks, exploring new flavors, and sharing the fruits of my labor with my friends and family.

Story Behind The Meatballs:
I have lots of Italian friends whose families have amazing Italian mothers who would make the best meatballs. My Jewish dreams were filled with me being an Italian grandma in Italy making the best meatballs in the world. I tried tons of recipes and took from the yummiest parts of each. I soon found that instead of milk and bread that ricotta cheese worked better! I also always have leftover parsley and other ingredients and it would always go to waste! I decided to use those ingredients and the leftovers to make another amazing Italian meal, Ravioli Pesto.

The variety of smells from the food vendors would fill the streets. The noodles became my favorite. Elbow to elbow, bowl to bowl, perfect strangers became friends. Sharing the love and appreciation for these simple yet intricate dishes. For myself, the noodle symbolizes comfort, my culture and the lasting memories of my time in Hong Kong. It’s a memory that will last with me forever.

Being the daughter of a Chinese chef, I have always been around food and have been inspired by it from a young age. Hong Kong style noodle soup is my first great memories of food. On November 22nd I will be preparing 3 Hong Kong inspired noodle soup dishes. Please join me at Court Tree.

Opening Of "Still Here" By Carroll Gardens Filmmaker Mark Street At Court Street Collective

Court Tree Collective, a new gallery/event space at 371 Court Street between Carroll Street and First Place, has hosted quite a few interesting events since they opened late last year. From March 21st to April 3rd, the gallery will present an installation by Carroll Gardens filmmaker Mark Street entitled " Still Here." The opening reception will be on Friday at 7 PM. Don't forget to check it out.

Mr. Street brings a show of lightbox collages, a triptych video projection and a single channel loop projected weekly through the translucent upper window of Court Tree.

In his own words, “I like to work the surface of film to create rich visuals which I shape in a very intuitive, personal way. Since I started making films in 1983 I’ve always gone back to painting, bleaching and marking frames one by one; I am exhilarated by the tactile relationship with film material. I like the way these abstract films allow the viewer to be drawn into unfamiliar worlds.”

Mr Street has shown work in the New York Museum of Modern Art Cineprobe series (1991, 1994), at Anthology Film Archives (1993, 2006, 2009, 2012), Millennium (1990,1996), and the San Francisco Cinematheque (1986, 1992, 2009). His work has appeared at the Tribeca (5 times), Sundance, Rotterdam, New York, London, San Francisco, New York Underground, Sarajevo, Viennale, Ourense (Spain), Mill Valley, South by Southwest, and other film festivals.

The 7 minute loop from the street will be shown Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from 6pm – 8pm. Dates 3/21 to 4/4. The opening reception on March 21st will be a “lights off” exhibit. So the viewers can get a full presentation of the work.
