New York K!ds Club On Court Street To Open In May

Construction has taken a while, but the new location of New York K!ds Club and NYPreschool at 299 Court Street in the former Winn Discount store appears to be mostly completed and will open
this May.
The Court Street location will feature two classrooms and a state-of-the-art gym space over 3,000-square-foot.

According to its web site, NY Kids Club is a children's enrichment center "renowned for creative and innovative kids classes, camps, birthday parties, and events." The offerings at this location include gymnastics, dance, art, Spanish, chess and music classes.

The location will also feature New York Preschool, a New York City Universal Pre-Kindergarden provider, will offer half day classes for 2 year-olds to 4 year-olds.

Certainly, there is a growing need for such enrichment centers, as more and more young families are moving into the neighborhood and our public schools are overcrowded. However, I still miss Winn Discount. Do you?

Former Winn Discount Space On Court Street Will Soon Be A New York Kids Club And Preschool

In case you were wondering what kind of store will move into the former Winn Discount store at 299 Court Street, wonder no longer.  The large storefront will become the thirteenth outpost of NY KIDS Club and Preschool.  Posters announcing a January 2017 opening have appeared in the windows in the past few days.
NY Kids Club will be offering "a 6,000 square foot, two story complex featuring five classrooms and state-of-the -art gym space".  Besides a pre-school, the space will be rented out for birthday celebrations and will offer summer camps, dance, art, and language programs.

The NY Kids Club coming to Cobble Hill continues a trend towards children's programing here in South Brooklyn which reflects the area's new demographic.  Right across the street from this location at 292 Court Street, a LePort Montessori School is slated to open.
Just one block away on Court street, Champion's Martial Art Studio just opened its doors in January of this year.
Countless other businesses catering to young families have recently opened or are in the process of opening.

As for the Winn Discount store which closed in September 2015 after decades in the neighborhood, it is still missed by many in the neighborhood.  How about you?

Winn Home And Beauty On Court Street To Close (For A While)

Winn Home and Beauty at 299 Court Street, the large variety store that has been a fixture in the neighborhood for many years, is currently running a storewide clearance sale.  This morning, when I stopped by to take the photos above, I asked an employee if the store was closing.  The young man told  me that "yes", Winn was going to close its doors in the next few weeks and will stay closed for about 6 to 9 months.  It "may re-open", he added.
The reason for the closing, accordion to the employee, is that the building's owner is adding apartments on top of the building. During the construction period, Winn will be closed for business.

Will you miss the place? Personally, in the past two or three years, I found their prices outrageous.  I miss the old Winn, when it was still a real discount store.

When Winn Discount, the delightfully cluttered variety store at 299 Court Street, got a remodel last year,  the prices got a makeover as well and were adjusted upwards.  Now, a name change confirms that Winn is no longer a discount place.  New bold lettering on the storefront indicate that from now on, the place will be called Winn Home & Beauty.

Delightfully Cluttered Winn Discount On Court Street To Remodel

The shelves inside Winn Discount at 299 Court Street, the usually cluttered variety store, look rather sparse since every item in the store has been reduced by 50% during a remodeling sale. Afraid that the business was closing for good, I asked the owner if the store was indeed just getting a make-over. He assured me that the sale was just a way of getting rid of extra stock and that he was making room for some popular items and new lines.
I hope so. I love Winn Discount and its eclectic collection of merchandise. I would hate if it turned into just another Rite Aid or CVS.

Just as an aside: About twenty years ago, Mastellone, the deli next door at 303 Court Street, included the space now occupied by Winn's. Back then, Mastellone's was more of a supermarket.
